Aggregating Beat Writers Roster Predictions: Post-Game 1 Edition

Here’s what a few of our beat writers/outlets are thinking. I know the Athletic and DFP are normally paywalled, but I was able to read both of their articles without a subscription, so I’ll them…if you want to see any of their breakdowns for why or who was close, you’ll have to read those articles yourself. This is just a look at the players.

Looks like the guys have 45 locks at 100% (not including Jamo and Moseley - although a couple have Moseley on the initial 53-man).

Surprising to not see Julian not sneak on to a single one after his performance.

I’ll take my boys here at the Den and me over the aggregate beat writer group.

Not one had Eze making the team. 100% had both MJJ and Cabina making it.

I disagree on all 3 predictions.

If the Lions roster Cabinda, it’ll be a real head scratcher for me. I just don’t think this roster has space for a player that can’t catch the ball out of the backfield and isn’t likely to bring really much of anything on offense, even though he might be good on special teams. Time to move on!

I would flip Cabina for Julian in a heartbeat. You can never have enough pass rushers. Injuries happen.

I’m skeptical on Jones not making it, not predicting he will or won’t.
Just reading DC comments on how he and Brad wanted MJJ on the team but weren’t able to sign him then due to cap issues and were happy to get him back this year makes me think he is on the roster, worse case until JW comes back.
Possibly even a mentor for Williams as both DC and BH like veteran in the room.

Or Pittman for JOkwara. And then of course Drummond who IMO in baseball terms looked like a AAAA talent.

Bridgewater as their QB2 in May, June, July, or early August

I’m keeping Pittman just for special teams. No one played more special teams snaps for the Lions last year than Pittman. Cabinda provides some ST value, but Pittman, much more.

They are behind on Julian again, behind on the trade Julian train behind on the keep Julian train. Don’t cut him that’s silly.

Gonna be hard to keep Maurice Alexander off.

Cabinda over Pittman for sure
FB1 over LB6 that’s easy

Mims? Green? Snell? Craig? Hart? Covington?

Julian once clocked 21MPH while at ND. He supposedly ran 4.46 at a lower weight as an underclassmen and 4.53 at over 240 going into his Junior year. Even if he’s 255-260 now he’s still every bit the athlete that Pittman is. He took 40% of ST snaps last game and I believe he was at 38% for the 2021 season (IIRC). Fipp is a great coach. We have the athletes. We can handle teams.

For me Drummond is the one I see little value in. Cabinda and Pittman I do get the theoretical role. It’s Tom Kennedy redux. All the best writers are pushing him bc of the story. I’m get that he had some solid practice reps but I thought he looked pretty bad against the G-men and his talent level simply isn’t deserving of being an NFL WR IMO. I think he’ll make it to the PS which unlocks his value (that he is sound and can probably quickly acclimatize if elevated and get decently close to replacement level.

You’re probably wrong on all three. Jones is 100% making the team, that’s why they guaranteed the money. Cabinda will probably make it and Eze there is no reason to keep him on 53 man when you can put him on the PS, no one is claiming him, he’s still not good and is still a developmental guy.

After seeing Lucas make key blocks on Alexander’s house call as well as demonstrating coverage chops vs Giant in practice last week, I’d prefer we have an extra CB than another feel-good WR story. Receiver is a flashy position that makes good news fodder. But those guys seldom come out of nowhere to make major contributions. An in-game injury to a CB and you’ll be wishing your lucky stars we had that cover guy.

Cabinda is another guy I’m fine moving on from. Unless I’m missing some integral Special Teams role he fills that can’t be approximated by someone else, he offers very little as an offensive weapon.

I’m a big Lucas fan. He’s old but the dude can play. I’d like to figure out how to keep him as well but it’s gonna be tight.

If those 45 are locks, who gets the other 8 spots?
Starling
Cota
Alexander
JOk
W Harris
OT (undecided)
No clue beyond that.
Although, I actually think there are only 43 locks.
No way Levi and Cabinda are locks.
