I understand he changed the game against us (see: Vildor, forehead) but he’s not a game changer. Am I wrong or is $30M a year for a player your backup CB can handle pretty well a tad rich? Is Aiyuk even a consensus top 20 WR? I recall him having a slow start to his career and having one solid season leading to his “hold-in” earning him top money. Get it while you can and your team is willing to pay it (as long as we pay ARSB and you pay Aiyuk, i’m good).
So @DeadStroke help me out. I know we have to wait until we see the contract… but with this, and trent williams wanting a big raise, what does their cap look like?
They are going to have to restructure some people. For 2025 they are already $30+m in the HOLE!
And that’s before giving brock purdy $50m aav
49ers have been all in for a few years now, backloading contracts and kicking the can down the road.
DeadStroke would know better than me, but both Philly and San Fran are trending towards a really bad situation, similar to what the Saints have been dealing with for the last 2-3 years.
My immediate thought is he isn’t worth that kinda coin but came here to ask if I’m missing something.
How in the heck will they be able to construct a team once Brock is due for a raise?
Now Deebo needs to hold out for more money.
They’re OK for this year at least because Purdy is basically the cheapest guy in the league.
But once they have to pay him next year, a lot of guys will have to go. I suspect Deebo will be one of them.
It’s the market rate. He’s definitely a top 20 WR. I’d even argue top 15, but he doesn’t crack the top 10. He’s the type of #1 WR that doesn’t typically take over games, but can reliably produce 5 for 80 and a TD. If he didn’t have the other weapons around him and he was the focus of the defense, he would struggle
The 49ers sure are throwing around money… We could be heading there soon too.
We paid Goff, Sewell and St. Brown
Potentially Alim, Hutch and Jamo soon enough.
While I am sad that Aiyuk is staying on the 9ers, the fact is they are running out of money faster and faster. I have a friend who is a big 9ers guy, and he thinks GM John Lynch is killing the team. He felt like last year was their year and they blew their last chance.
They haven’t drafted well in awhile, so they end up overpaying guys to keep the talent up. That drives up the cost to keep existing talent, and runs out the money to pay their depth guys. Now they have to pay Trent Williams, and of course Purdy at the end of the year. There are real issues in 9er country.
Here is an article from Pro Football Talk that is saying the 49ers messed up this deal. I would agree. 49ers dragged their feet, misplayed their hand on Brandon Aiyuk deal - NBC Sports
Imagine they didn’t waste multiple first rounders on Trey Lance.
Yep, and look at their 2022 draft. It’s scary bad. The ONLY player on the roster and I believe in the entire NFL, was Mr Irrelevant. Had Purdy not taken over, the 49ers would’ve went 0 for everyone.
Meh. So the 49ers end up having one or two bad seasons, before competing for a SB for four straight years. The usual for SF over the last 50 years
At first glance this feels like one of those deals they’ll regret after a year or two.
And Decker. Alim sooner than you think imo.
I think they looked at it like this:
- He’s younger than Deebo.
- Purdy, who we intend to pay, loves throwing to Aiyuk. Their skillsets complement each other.
- If we have to move on from a WR (which we will next year once we pay Purdy), Deebo is a better choice because he’s older and his game won’t age as well.
- Maybe we’ll get better offers next year for Deebo than this crap were getting for Aiyuk right now.
Basically, Aiyuk fits better with the Purdy timeline.
And most importantly their window is now and that window closes without both of those WRs IMO.
I still think the Niners are on the downslope or at worst soon to begin that descent.
The end of this thread got me to thinking: if the 49ers have had so much success, how did the 49ers pick high enough to select Nick Bosa? He was No. 2 overall in 2019.
They went 4-12 in 2018.
With Quinn in charge, I would’ve traded the Lions 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Rd picks to move up to No. 2 overall to get Bosa.
That would have cost the Lions TJ Hockenson, Jahlani Tavai, Will Harris, and Austin Bryant. In other words, almost nothing. It also reinforces what a horrendously bad draft that was.
On the other hand, if Holmes is the one making the picks, I don’t do that deal.
