Here is something that’s pretty crazy from the Browns game. I was watching the mic’d up clips, and Hutch remarked that “they refuse the chip me”. Then I was watching the all 22 breakdown on Hutch’s big day, and the commentor was noting that during the game, the Browns kept leaving Cornelius Lucas 1-1 with Hutch, and never brought help to that side. Multiple times in pass protection, the RB who would be lined up on Hutch’s side, would actually cross the formation to help the LT instead of staying on the right side to help with blocking Hutch. The commentor kept saying this made no sense, and he couldn’t understand why Stefankski refused to adjust even after Hutch kept getting home.

The commentor was right of course, but watching the clips I realized something. The Browns last game film on the Lions was of course the Ravens MNF game. That’s the game where they saw AQM blow up and pile up sacks against Lamar. The Browns went into the Lions game plan and their protection scheme was actually to focus on AQM as the primary threat instead of Hutchinson. Hutchinson made them pay for that decision.

When you say that AQM is THE guy instead of a guy, the Cleveland Browns thought so too. This is a big reason so many of us were after Brad, saying we needed someone opposite of Hutch. The Ravens picked their poison and blocked Hutch, and AQM wrecked their day. The Browns picked their poison and blocked AQM and Hutch wrecked their day. This was the vision we’ve been waiting for, finally playing out. Up next? The Bengals, who cannot block anyone.

However, Stefankski also thought it was a good idea to start joe flacco so…

Bro, when Alim gets back to full health and game shape, this cat is going to have 4 sacks per game

Williams, Alim, Hutch and Ali

I don’t think the Browns chose to block AQM over Hutch. Often times the play design, or QB requires an emphasis on the blind side. I have QB’s that can handle pressure from the right because they can see it but freak out at the slightest hint of backside pressure.

If everything is equal, I don’t think any NFL coach would choose to block AQM over Hutch.

I’ll say this, Dan & Brad can ■■■■■■■ find great players !

Alim if healthy will have a larger impact on our dlines performance than who is opposite Hutch. With that said… I am happy that AQM is performing as a relatively cheap depth guy.

Dan & Brad have been proven right again.

AQM was performing equally if not better than Za’ at the end of the season and Brad chose him over Za’. Both are rotational DE’s but Za wanted to be paid like a starter. If Za’ had been willing to accept the $4.2M he got from Philly early in the process he might be on the roster. Having AQM, Za’, and Davenport would have really provided quality depth at DE. Brad wasn’t going to pay Za’ $8M when Davenport is the starter at $2.5M and AQM is equivalent at $1.5M.

I’m consistently amazed at how good this program is at finding these guys who are bouncing around and fitting them in to high quality roles.

Justin Rogers just posted an article on Tyler Lacy, how he is looking like another win. Jacksonville kept him inside after drafting him with mediocre results before giving up on him. The Lions are moving him back outside with promising results.

Paywalled but here’s a sniip:

Tyler Lacy scored an RAS of 7.39 as a DT, not sure how to transpose that into a DE score. Would like @Thats2 take.

Math Bomb has a calculator tool….
so we can generate our own…

though it is pretty low.

Davenport is now the emergency backup. Good for 1, maybe 2 games. Don’t count on more, and, you won’t be disappointed.

How he chooses to destroy his body in service of me finally getting to watch a Lions Super Bowl is none of my business

FWIW, Romeo Okwara, who had some modest success for the Lions [7.5 sacks in 2018 & 10 sacks in 2020], had a 1.73 10-yard split. Lacy’s at 1.69 is better and he’s heavier than Okwara was.
