Listen, weve had many talks about throwing first round picks at Maxx Crosby, Trey Hendrickson, Myles Garret ETC.
… i think out of all of them, id be willing to throw the kitchen sink for this, even after a down year, this is like… one of the few guys that can transform a defense, and yes id throw in Alim McNeil to get him Sexy Dexy. Easily one of the best DT’s in the entire NFL, only issue is… prolly means a 2027 pick (which… yeah that can be a game changing pick for sure)
Could we make it work with some restructures? Probably. Does it seem like we want to? Not really. We prefer to pay our own and not venture outside of that. I think Brad has more of “his” guys that he still wants to lock up so I’d be surprised if they even nibble at Lawrence.
The only way would be if they include Alim. Didn’t Brad say they can’t get anyone high priced because it would cripple their cap because they want to re-sign their own guys? I assume Gibbs and Jack. I dont know about LaPorta and Branch. I hope so.
Brad talked in great length during his interview with the Lions Collective podcast about the fact that there is no scope to add anyone external on a large contract because of the money already committed to Goff, St Brown, Sewell, Kerby, Hutch and Jamo, and the money that will likely be committed to LaPorta, Campbell, Branch and Gibbs.
Just between the six of those contracts already signed the APY is $204 million. The cap this year is $301 million. Yes, there are ways to reduce cap hits, but the Lions are already number 3 in void year salary cap commitments, ie salary cap deferrals to fit more players in now. We as fans can’t really expect much more than that, and when the class of 2023 is signed the team will be right on the limit of how many big contracts they can carry.
Trading for Dexter Lawrence would cost precious picks that provide more affordable talent and replenish the losses of players like Anzalone, Glasgow, Raymond, Lopez, Robertson, and it would mean probably not re-signing two of the four guys we drafted in 2023.
Idk, he sucked last year and was about 50lbs out of shape. 2-3 years ago I’d be interested, but I’d want to see what kind of shape he’s in now and if he hasnt turned into a turd.
The only issue is that production from last year, but idk if that was Daboll and the new DC asking him to gain weight for being more of a Pure NT or not (would need to look into it)
if he gets back to 2024 form… hes a game changing piece no question
What @KarlKaliente said. I heard Valenti talking about that very thing. I had a man crush on Dexter Lawrence coming out of Clemson. But if weight is an issue and he wants more guaranteed money I would hope the Lions don’t take that on. But if he can recommit himself I’d love it!
