JRM is a marginal player on his best day. I have no idea why people think so highly of him. I agree with moving on from him. I just don’t agree with how they handled the position beyond letting JRM walk.
The Texans have a problem on defense. JRM is not a solution to a problem.
We need Spielman heavily involved in the first two rounds (at least) of the 23 draft. Pretty sure he knows what a LB looks like, and does.
We knew it was bad 2 months ago when vets couldn’t beat out our rookie.
It was reported that Spielman did not like ANY LB in the 2021 draft. I’m not sure that included Parsons, but it did include Bolton and JOK in the second round (where we drafted Onzunoplay). I forget whether it was Holmes or Campbell (or Dorsey) who said that you’re always harder on the position you play, and you need to guard against that. At the time, it sounded more like he was the problem rather than the solution. He did give his approval to Barnes, but only because he fell to the fifth round.
We just need to put a higher value on the LB position .
YOu would think Spielman would be able to help. Then again, the LB position was very differnt back then.
I think they need to start Barnes over Anazalone. Without question. He may struggle for a bit…but I would much rather see Barnes getting reps at this point.
I believe Anzalone was brought in last year because he can communicate the defense coming from NO and he’s a respected vet by coaches. He knew the expectations and details more than anyone on Detroit’s roster and we needed bodies out there. He’s solid for the locker room and the culture. To me he is only a backup, but he’s actually quality depth.
Bringing him back this year wasn’t totally shocking but I was a little surprised to be honest. I really thought we would target his replacement but for whatever reason it didn’t work out. Thankfully we hit on Rodrigo, have to also give the staff some credit there. Fully expecting us to get a solid player to replace Anzalone in the offseason. Personally I feel Barnes still has a chance, I was saying to my friends when we got near training camp that if Barnes shows up I think it’s year 3, time will tell.
JRM was our best LB last year.
He (JRM) would have cost us about a million more than AA. 2M at most.
We would have been faster and younger had they kept JRM rather than Anzalone.
And he (that is JRM, to be clear) probably wouldn’t have bumped MRod off the play, meaning Seattle punts and we win.
Why don’t we not mention AA, or Board, or any other sucky LB this team has had recently?
