Recall that he was playing in the Giants game, was blocked, and while falling backwards was stopped by Vaki’s leg. His head kept going, creating a whiplash. His head never hit the ground, but the whiplash apparently created a neck injury. The diagnosis was a concussion and a neck injury. He had scans, and they showed something that was deemed NOT GOOD.
Green was cut the next day. He was on waivers, but no one picked him up. It was not clear whether an injury settlement was offered or not, but my understanding is that one was not offered. An injury settlement would have allowed him to negotiate with any other team if and when he was ready to come back. Since it was not in place in five days, he reverted to the Lions IR and he is still a Lion. (@DeadStroke please fact check)!
I believe AG is out for the year, and the long term outlook doesn’t appear to be good. I’m wondering what exactly showed up on the scan for 31 teams to pass on him. Is anyone familiar with whiplash injuries? Is he done for good?
@Jman - my condolences. I know how much of a fan of him you are.
When a player is waived with an injury, they are rarely (if ever) claimed by another team. I can’t think of a single instance where an injured player was waived and claimed. Green not claimed by another team after the injury is not a surprise.
The surprise was that there was no injury settlement. It could be that the injury was so severe that he will be out for the year. Half the guys waived injured received an injury settlement, the other half didn’t.
Green is done for the year, he’s got 8 months to decide what he’s going to do.
5 should be right, then. Lions weren’t keeping that section of the roster updated the last couple weeks. I was updating based on the nfl.com transactions page.
I had 5 getting waived injured, with two getting injury settlements (Gilbert and Norris), two that didn’t (Green and Gavin) and one that I think his settlement expires today (Bada).
So (2) reverted back to IR - Green and Gavin, (4) were placed directly on Reserve IR (Badge, Lynn, Muti, T Smith) and (3) were placed on IR - designated to return (Commish, Moseley, BroMart), with (1) Mohagany placed on Reserve NFI and (1) is in transition - Bada.
Green’s career has been deemed over before. He instead responded by getting back on the field and revealing a level of play many didn’t know was in there. There is a reason that Brad and his team target players with a proof of concept of their response to react to adversity. In football and in life you’re going to need it. Matter of if not when.
