I am getting antsy waiting around, I think they already know who they want/ minds are made up…but not hearing anything.
They can start interviewing some people such as Saleh who are done with their seasons on Monday IIRC. Guys like Bieniemy who are in the playoffs can be virtually interviewed without team permission as well on Monday.
I think the Lions want to hire the GM first and let him hire the HC. They seem to be doing a pretty thorough search.
So far they have interviewed:
Kyle O’Brien: Lions’ VP of player personnel
Lance Newmark: Lions’ director of player personnel
Rob Lohman: Lions’ director of player personnel
Louis Riddick: ESPN analyst, MNF commentator
Rick Smith: Former GM Texans
Scott Pioli: NFL Network & CBS analyst
Thomas Dimitroff: Former GM Falcons
Scheduled/Lions Interested:
Brad Holmes: Rams director of college scouting
Terry Fontenot: Saints VP/assistant general manager of pro personnel
Jerry Reese: Former GM Giants
Riddick is my least favorite of the lot. He slips into criticism a bit too easily on-air. One can make themselves seem smarter than they really are (even to themselves) when they’re given a platform to second-guess their peers with the benefit of hindsight. There may be some of those guys with the same tendancy, but since he’s the only one on-air, he’s the only one I tire of. Pioli would be my next least favorite. Like Mayhew, I don’t think he has any conviction on what the team should look like.
While I agree with you, I have also heard him go into criticism of himself and mistakes they made with the Eagles…in particular in assembling “the dream team.”
I’ve always been highly impressed by Riddick. Always seemed very informed, well opinionated, and had some history of front office work.
But I’ll always be Millenized and scared to death of a tv guy running my team.
