Anyone else Danish?

2nd generation Danish American here, grandparents immigrated on both sides. This is a traditional Danish Christmas food, served for breakfast typically with a breakfast sausage. These are great, I also make Swedish pancakes one day so lot’s of syrup and carbs.

First time I was in Denmark I had some Italian pastries, really good. When I got to Italy they were called Danish pastries, even though they were the same thing. Perception sells.

Actually no, this one is pretty close. The egg whites really need to be frothy. Any oil in the base of the spheres in the pan works, I simply use vegetable oil not butter. Old Danish women I learned this from used knitting needles to turn the “balls” as they were cooking. Getting used to the stove is actually the hardest task, getting the right temp and a feel for how much oil, batter and turning works best. Oh and 3 eggs vs 2.

So now I have two Aebleskiver pans in my Amazon cart. Would you recommend nonstick or cast iron?

Reading the directions it reminds me of takoyake - A favorite street food of mine when I lived in Japan. Only it was always savory and not sweet. I spent many a buzzed evening watching takoyake vendors flip them with chopsticks in their dimpled pans

I actually have several pans, including an electric pan. Cast iron is great if you have a gas stove or an electric stove that doesn’t have a glass top. I just gave a non-stick to a friend in Wisconsin and cooked a couple batches for them and was very impressed with it. I can’t purchase it anymore though, it came from Denmark and I had had it for some time but never used it. Kicking myself because it really worked well. My electric one is inconsistent heat but you can deal with that once you know the pan. Simple, easy clean. BTW, you’ll find that the recipe makes PLENTY so invite friends.

Actually picking up my pan today! Ordered it from Amazon. My first recipe I’m going to fill with a thickened Dutch eggnog. Thanks for the tip on the board here! I never knew about these and I’m always looking to try new recipes

Plus when I tell guests I made Advocaat Aebleskiver it will sound super fancy

Any particular reason why you don’t use butter here? It seems that would give it a nice extra bit of flavor
