I want to take a second to make a small correction and to add context to the Cleveland reference. If we were the 2015 Browns, that means we go 3-13 but then go 1-15 next year and 0-16 two years from now. We would then go 7-8-1 three years from now and 6-10 four years from now. Then FINALLY 5 years from now we would have a winning season. Does anyone actually want to follow that model?
So here’s how it breaks down. The Browns strategy to tank and stockpile beans failed. The turning point was when they stayed put and took guys instead of trading down…but also when they started participating in free agency and trading picks for existing players. Hiring a good coaching staff also played a huge part.
Unless there is some low level practice squad type player that I’m not aware of…the Browns do not have a single player from their 2015 draft despite having 12 magic beans including 2 first rounders. In 2016 they had 14 picks and blew nearly every one of them. Only WR Rashard Higgins is still with the team. If we are the 2015 Browns…that means we are about to fuck up the 2022 draft. In 2017 (which would be 2 years from now) they had 10 picks and they only have Myles Garrett and TE David Njoku left. The 2018 draft is the one where they landed Baker, Ward, Chubb and a few other guys. For us that’s 3 years from now and the 2024 draft. But even after having that draft, they were still a losing team that fired its coaching staff in each of the next 2 years. So this is all to say that if the 2021 Lions are the 2015 Browns we can finally look forward to a Browns style turnaround with a good 2024 draft that will put us in position to finally have a winning record in 2026. That’s after firing Dan Campbell, firing Dan Campbell’s replacement and firing Dan Campbell’s replacements replacement.
Lol that’s a funny surface level comparison, I like it. Gave me a little smile.
I even did a little GM day with myself (as I often do because thinking about current lions is painful) where I had a similar draft breakdown for next year.
Had the lions trading back with the Jets, getting picks ~3 & ~13, drafting Hutch and Corral. But then I went WR Jameson with the 3rd first rounder.
I got the exact opposite out of that. The best path forward is to hire competent coaching and a GM that can put together a team through FA and the draft and through trades. It’s definitely not by trading your best players away for a bunch of draft picks that will likely bust more often than not.
I think you missed it, I think with what he said they had over 20 picks in 2 years with I believe only 2 being with the team. That means stock piling all them picks didn’t help much. When they stayed put they did much better.
I hope Dorsey can prevent Holmes from bringing in another Goff.
A pass rush HAS to be a priority going into next season.
My other hot take is not paying top tier money for Hock. He’s a good player, but I’m not paying superstar money for what he brings. Again, good player, no question.
That line (Richard, what’d you do?) is so entrenched in my lexicon that it’ll just come out without me even thinking about it.
One of my newer employees was operating our industrial sewing machine, and it got bound up (which is something that just happens from time to time and is not a big deal). This sheepish, 19-year old young lady comes and gets me to report the issue.
My reaction, of course, is to give a super-duper over-the-top clearly sarcastic dramatic reaction with a, “Richard, what’d you do?” This girl looks up at me horrified and asked, “Why did you call me Richard?”
I typically leave “Richard” off the beginning and just go with the rest. Some people get the reference… but some sad sacks don’t.
Also… every time I or somebody near demonstrates good reflexes with a quick catch or reaction… I hit em with a “cat like reflexes”
and of course… if somebody asks me to take a look at something… I tell them how “I could get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull’s ass, but I’d rather take a butcher’s word.”
