I heard a little bit about this yesterday as the news broke on MLB radio. MLB lawyers apparently were stunned by this news, had no idea it was coming. No idea where this going for the Tigers but hopefully it eliminates blackout rules in Michigan.
Diamond Sports Group made the surprising move during a court hearing for its Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to reports from ESPN and the Athletic.
Bally Sports carried games for 12 teams this past season. ESPN reports that the contracts with the Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers expired this year.
The following seven teams will have to negotiate a new contract or find a new provider: Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays.
At this time, the deal with the Atlanta Braves has not been impacted. A spokesperson for the Braves said the organization does not have a comment at this time.
They mentioned Amazon, Apple TV and others along with MLB . tv picking up each teams games and eliminating blackouts. To be clear this was two hosts on the MLB channel.
I don’t live in Michigan, but used a friend’s Michigan address to get every Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons game on Bally. Not to mention non-priime time Lions games. Only reason I started watching the Tigers, it was a god send.
I can’t afford Live TV service PLUS MLB, NBA, NFL plus Hockey channels.
I travel for work a couple of nights per week and got HULU live so I could watch tv on the road on an iPad. Unfortunately HULU made it so you had to connect to your WIFI like once a month or it wouldn’t work on your device. Well, I wasn’t great at putting it on my schedule and got locked out a few times. Pissed me off.
So you pay 20 bucks a month directly to MLB, which is what it cost for Bally, except you will no longer get the Pistons and Redwings included in that price.
