But he’s he has led the Patriots to 17 AFC East division titles, 13 appearances in the AFC Championship Game, and nine Super Bowl appearances, with a record six wins. Overall, Belichick has won eight Super Bowl titles and finished as runner-up four times from his combined time as an assistant and head coach
Yes, Belichick has won six Super Bowls. He also hasn’t won a playoff game since Super Bowl LIII [the 2018 season]. And he may not get a chance to lose another playoff game this year.
Again, it’s not “what have you done for me lately?” It’s “what are you doing for me right now, and what will you do for me tomorrow?”
The problem belichick is having is with belichick the gm. He’s been pretty average drafting talent over the past 5 years. Possibly more. He’s also the one that thought it was a good idea to have Patricia be his offensive coordinator. The afc east is also finally getting their act together and building competitive teams. That was an automatic 6 wins each year for almost 2 decades for the Patriots. Missing Brady is a big deal but much more is going on than just that.
That’s what I’m saying. Belichick the gm hasn’t put together very good rosters. They’re solid from top to bottom but they lack the elite playmakers he used to get when he had an actual gm helping him out.
I think Bill Belicick, like many masterminds out there, is guilty of some pretty strong hubris. At times, this hubris becomes an achilles heel that can get him in trouble.
The whole thing about Patricia was just a game from day 1. Belichick wanted Patricia back, because he knew Patricia would be subordinate to him, and he did know his job. When people wanted to talk about the OC, Belichick just wanted to play games with the media and not name an OC in reality, because Belichick hates the whole idea about “you answer to me.” Irony twist, a guy who everyone agrees is a masterclass dictator when it comes to details and structure and demands unquestioned loyalty, also hates whenever he himself has to answer to someone else.
Belichick is unreal at designing defenses, and I think he gets into modes where when he sees someone with something, he just jumps into it. On the offensive side, maybe he sees a guy he himself would have a tough time stopping and figures that the rest of the NFL would have the same issue. Or he sees guys who match the traits he likes and looks for but ends up getting so enamored with them, he overdrafts. Instead of analyzing and learning from bad examples, he doubles down and makes another mistake.
To me, I see Belichick lot a lot of very famous generals. Sometimes, their unmatched levels of success, suck them into a false sense of security that they have a Midas touch and everything they touch turns to gold. Again, the irony here is, King Midas’s gold touch ended up hurting him far more than it helped him.
I think Bill values consistency and the ability to be where the coaches tell the guy to be above everything else. And he’s not willing to compromise on that priority, even when it means being at a talent disadvantage. Which goes back to your point. I think Bill and his staff think they can coach themselves out of anything.
In the same light he tries to find guys who can come in and deal with the Patriot Way bullshit. Where they mentally drain everyone and suck the love of football out of them. So again, going back to your point. They feel like the Patriot Way is right and can’t possibly be modified. Its the players that must do the modifying.
True, but that’s included in the 79-84 record. Bills a great coach no doubt, especially defensively, but without Brady he really hasn’t done much. won 1 playoff game in Cleveland
The Patriots won a lot of games… especially early in Brady’s career… because they had a dominant defense.
The first Super Bowl win… over the Rams… was one of the best defensive game plans in NFL history IMO.
The 2nd Super Bowl against Rams in 2018… was pretty much all defense as well. They allowed 3 points… to a team that was still scoring against everyone else even after Gurley’s knee quit.
No doubt, Bill deserves a ton of credit for that. The win/loss record without Brady is interesting to me though. Yesterday’s game for example, wtf were they doing at the end…beyond stupid.
