Bobby Layne and Matt Stafford

Natty is part Aang, part Tigger and part Captain Picard. RIP Patrick Stewart, btw.

Goff is by far the more consistent player.

He had one bad season with the Lions (2021) and two bad seasons for the Rams (2016 and 2020) and he was a rookie in 2016 and his team still made the playoffs and he won a playoff game in 2020.

Stafford has been far more inconsistent with both teams.

He had 2 amazing seasons with the Lions: 2011 and 2014
He also had 4 good but not great seasons with the Lions: 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2020.
His other 6 Lions seasons weren’t particularly good: 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2018, and 2019

It’s kind of the same story with the Rams.
He’s had 2 amazing seasons there: 2021 and 2025
He’s had 1 bad season there: 2022
He’s also had 2 good but not great seasons there: 2023 and 2024

i’m not even sure I’d call 2021 ā€˜bad’ check out the stats. If anything, the first half of the season was bad but the second half of the season I think he was one of the top five quarterbacks in the league. And averaged out with pretty darn good numbers.

I’d agree.

My point is Stafford played worse for us on a more regular basis than Goff has.

Goff has been constantly very good to great.

I mean apples to apples no??? I’ll admit Goff has shown to be one of if not the most consistent QB in the league. But the difference in EVERYTHING from GM - Coaching - personnel is extreme.

It’s kind of a weird to compare the two imo.

Exactly my stance.

Its crazy how tied together they are. Its wild that they went to the same high school.

So you can’t compare any 2 players, ever, with your terms.

And that Matthew Stafford and Matt Dillon went to the same dentist?!?!? What are the odds of that?

I am a dentist, maybe that’s my work

Really? Is that how thats interpreted by everyone or just you? Does the fact that it was me who said have anything to do with this response? lol…

But since you mentioned it, I think when comparing anything certain factors should be taken into place. Call me crazy, but comparing two players who played for the same franchise under completely different circumstances should consider those circumstances. For some reason, that doesn’t make sense to you?

Lets go away from this played out debate. Lets talk about comparing a QB of this era to say one from the 80s. Jared Goff is putting up significantly better numbers than Joe Montana ever did. Should we not take into consideration why that is? Or should we just blanket compare them as equals with stats on paper? I think again, here and pretty much all cases when comparing things, its more than appropriate to also take into account circumstance.

You get all this…you commented because it was me. And the only time you are going to jump in on something i say is to be hyper critical of what i said. It’s all good I’m used to it as its the norm.

I completely agree. Its hard to compare players of today vs players 40 years ago, its a different game. I also understand that if Stafford had been drafted by Holmes and had the coaching and infrastructure back when he was starting out that we have now, things might look very different on how Stafford performed and how he is perceived now by Lion’s fans.

And not to mention that the Packers of today with Love aren’t the same Packers when Stafford started with Rodgers and winning a Superbowl. The Bears were even good then. The Bears are good again now but before Ben they weren’t great.

Anyways, I’m agreeing with you that its hard to compare even QB’s of the same teams.

Sooooo much yes. Comparing them, right here, right now, today, I’d much prefer Goff, with age being the biggest factor.

If they weee both straight out of college, I’d prefer stafford, mostly because I like his leadership style better. Goff has DRAMATICALLY closed the gap between them.

If we protect Goff well enough, we get a title. I can’t even believe how durable golf has been. Dude has done a great job of improving every year as well.

Yeah, I don’t know that I’d take Stafford over Goff. Goff is so much smarter with the ball and knows his strengths and limitations and stays within them. Stafford makes too many mistakes that negates his arm strength and throwing ability.
At the end of the game is where I give Stafford a slight advantage.
