Haven’t watched yet but they’re always prettt thorough.

These cats talk about Monty & Gibby the way I do.
Montgomery playing behind a better line.
Also → our OL is better this year than it was last year.
Gibby won’t be as consistent, because of the way Johnson uses him, but he will have some games that are HUGE!
Monty will be the meat’n’potatoes.

Love the optimism and share it.
I am really curious how many, what percentage of time, we will see Gibbs and Montgomery on the field together?
I’m assuming, easily can be wrong, that it may be higher in the first six games than the rest of the season.

I haven’t watch the vid, so this isn’t a reflection one way or the other on what they say.

It’s kind of amazing how little attention Monty has received given the hype around the Lions. The drama around Jamo and Gibbs, and to a lesser degree the speculation about what LaPorta can be, have really taken the spotlight away from him.

They’re very bullish on Monty. One of them is a Bears fan as well fwiw.

I think Montgomery will have a huge year.
When you look at what he was able to do in Chicago with their OL, then compare to the OL in Detroit and he should have a top 10 RB year imo.

In December when I did the thread on Williams vs Montgomery, " For me, I’m hoping he’s back but at a reasonable deal. If he decides to move on, I would be more than happy to get a player like David M as the consolation prize." He was the missed tackle king at Iowa State and just needs a crease, something he never really got from the Bears. And missed doesn’t mean whiff, it means couldn’t bring him down. He’s a solid pro. happy to have him here.

Montgomery now has 101 forced missed tackles this season to claim the record.

Rank Season Player School Missed Tackles
1 2017 David Montgomery ISU 101
2 2016 Dalvin Cook FSU 89
T-3 2015 Leonard Fournette LSU 88
T-3 2016 Kareem Hunt TOL 88

Nailed it!

Do you think Monty could benefit from toning it down a bit on the jukes? You’ll see him do some shake and bake and dip and … just seems like overkill at times. I love that he forces missed tackles but can’t help but feel in terms of momentum lost, etc. he is at times inefficient.

Maybe, but I don’t think so.

Completely agree, man. He’s going to absolutely crush it here.

Two things.

First, even allowing for the fact that those are highlights I LOVE the effort. Shades of Roger Craig. Doesn’t have Craig’s leg lift, but the way he pulls out of ankle tackles is reminiscent. That guy isn’t just going down for you, defender; better wrap him up!

OTOH, the way he carries the ball looks a little loose to me. But that’s not reflected in high fumble numbers, so doesn’t seem to be an actual problem.

Tell you what: if Gibbs gets a ton of snaps even w/Montgomery healthy, it’ll be because Gibbs is a superstar. Cuz DM is that good. It’ll take a stud to displace him.

I’m hoping he doesn’t score quite as many TDs as Williams only because the receivers are getting scores instead of being tackled at the one. Actually, maybe he gets more scores and the whole receiver thing happens would be better.

I don’t disagree, to be honest wasn’t really thinking scoring more about rushing and receiving. If he and Gibbs are in the backfield you would think Gibbs is the one running the route, may create other options for Montgomery. Just spitball’n kool-aid.

  1. He absolutely is that good.
  2. prepare yourself for some Ben Johnson Wizardry in the form of 2rB sets as well as Gibby at WR

Yeah, there’ll be some of this (2-RB sets) and that (Gibbs at WR) but I’m guessing neither happens a ton out the gate. 3/4th of the time, I imagine, it’ll be one or the other - and I’m guessing most of those times it’ll be Monty.

I loved J-Will but he was a real liability as a receiver, which created space for Swift, especially on 3rd downs. DM is a very good receiving back, better than his target numbers suggest.

He’s also very good as a pass blocker (as was J-Will). According to PFF, “Montgomery’s 71.7 pass-blocking grade over his first four seasons is a top-10 mark among running backs over the span.” That’s a big deal. Not at all obvious that Gibbs will be get the majority of 3rd-down looks when only one of them is in the backfield.

Agree. Part of the plan will be to keep monty frexh too though. Not just ride him into the dirt until he’s injured. I love Montgomery just as much as you do…I just love Gibby more. HAHAHAHA!

Very thankful for both of 'em! Montgomery I gonna be fantastic here.

Monty has been a combined 1500 yard, 10 TD back before. He did that in 2020 with the Bears behind a fairly weak O-line. He could potentially have a massive year running behind the Lions line.

That was an incredible find, @CuriousHusker. I’ll eventually get to and skip through their other NFC videos. The depth of analysis for guys who apparently cover the whole league was rare.

Their comments on Gibbs/Montgomery reflect my sense of how they’ll be used. The 2:20 after the time-stamped video start views Gibbs as a WR who can run the ball, rather than the reverse. I recommend watching the whole video at your leisure.
