Brad Holmes doesn't care if you want an EDGE

No, he doesn’t. But there are edges that may slip into Brad’s range without using future draft capital.

Probably not Que Robinson or Elijah Roberts or Jared Ivey

Possibly Jah Joyner or Fadil Diggs or Elijah Ponder (my guess) or Antwan Powell-Ryland or others.

Brad snagged Mahogany and Wingo in the 6th round last year. Brad will get to our pesky egde problem tomorrow.

This is all fine and good if it works. The fact is Holmes isn’t 100% right and this whole edge ordeal is giving off a very Mayhew/Schwartz smartest guy in the room vibe. Which is fine, WHEN YOU’RE RIGHT. Holmes has been right more than wrong but Jesus Christ the thought of Marcus Davenport starting is absolutely disgusting.

It’s gonna be okay. He doesn’t care that you want a DE. He is not playing smartest man in the room. Such a lame complaint just bc he didn’t do what a fan wanted him to do. “Well, shit, brad didn’t do what steve the lawyer in LA thinks is best, so he really must be arrogant and playing smartest man in the room”. Bob Quinn played smartest man in the room w the fake bravado and that stupid frickon bat, look where that got us. Brad holmes ha drafted more probowlers/allpros in the last 4 years then anyone else. Every year we improve our win total. Worst roster to top 2 in 4 years. He doesn’t care you want a de and he didn’t chase one over the people he did take.

Brad’s been letting us know all offseason that our perceived “need” at edge wasn’t that high on his list of things to do.
And I have 9 reasons to trust in Brad’s draft philosophy:

  1. Peneii Sewell
  2. Alim McNeil
  3. Amon Ra
  4. Barnes
  5. Jamo
  6. Kerby
  7. Gibbs
  8. LaPorta
  9. Branch
That’s leaving Hutch and Campbell off the list for reasons. Also, 2 playoff wins and a number 1 seed. He’s doing alright.

I dont know it does kinda have that smartest man in the room vibe. Sorta like what Bob did with Tabor and/or ignoring the RB situation.

Difference is Brad might actually be the smartest man in the room and BQ was an idiot.

Brad takes risks…. Similar to some former Lions GMs who failed. The big difference is Brad hits on those risks far more than he misses. Is it luck or is he just good at his job? Probably a little of both… but I think the real difference is Brad is not in it alone. He has a good front office he can lean on to make smarter choices.

Diggs or maybe RJ Oben. Maybe Collin Oliver. Yeah there’s still options to chose from.

“We’re not going to Chase a position. The guy has to be a good player that WE love… we’re not going to take a player that we don’t value as high just because he plays a position.” - Brad Holmes on last nights media address.
I didn’t think I could love another man more then Dan Campbell. I’m in a threesome.

Grade this draft in a couple years.

I would normally agree with that statement as a general rule in every draft, except, it doesn’t usually take a couple years to see that Brad killed it.

You read between the lines on that and it sounds like Brad did try to get an EDGE player. Its takes two teams willing to trade etc.

One of the drawbacks, the best drawback to ever have, is when you are successful you pick later. Just facts. You can still draft good players, but sometimes you have to let the draft come to you and its harder to get what you want.

I think its worth mentioning that we had four major needs coming into the draft: DT, EDGE, WR, and OG. Not in that order. We hit three so far. Not bad for a guy who doesn’t draft on need. I would also throw WLB in the mix and I expect to see one come off the board.

Hope there’s not starting to be a little spite involved. I can’t imagine that he cares what anyone thinks, and he’s earned that. Yet is it starting to feel slightly weird?

There’s prbably a little spite involved…he did feel the need to pull out reciepts a couple years ago after they won a playoff game. Not a fan of org’s, players, coaches, gm’s pulling out receipts until they actually win a championship…then by all means, smother those reciepts in poop and shove em down all the doubters throats :man_shrugging:
