Brock Purdy vs. Jared Goff and Patrick Mahomes vs. Lamar Jackson is teasing a a 'game manager' vs. 'game-changer' Super Bowl

This is the guy who gave the Lions draft an F and the LaPorta pick a C+ because they took him over Michael Mayer.

I mean it’s true though. Goff isn’t a mobile improvisor, he’s the same mould of QB as Brady, Peyton Manning, Brees etc, which is a game manager. A big feature of our offense is dink and dunk, seven yards here, four yards there. ‘Game manager’ gets a lot of shit as a label, but those guys win the vast majority of Super Bowls.

We got the most handsome QB going for us…

So I like to compare JG to TB12

Cousins and Purdy are a better comparison IMO. And I am not sure Purdy is accurate enough for that comparison.

And I also think there is something between a QB that runs (creator) and not runners (managers).

I mean Stafford does not run much and no one would accuse him of game management.

The idea that pocket passer = game manager is laughable on its face.

I’m not sure any further analysis is warranted.

Goff’s YPA is better than any QB remaining in the playoffs:

The writer is spot on. Goff is merely a game manager, which is why they had him do 3 handoffs on the final possession against the Rams to set up a better punt. Oh wait…

What they really mean when they say this is 2 guys who can win games with their legs (which allows them to overcome bad blocking) vs. 2 guys who can’t. And like everyone else here I say big deal? As long as our guy is protected it doesn’t mean squat, and we’re really good at doing that.

The focus should be on how straight up talented those QBs on the other side are, not that they’re “game-changers” or whatever label you want to give them. It doesn’t matter what type of QBs they are, it matters that they’re good.

I mean just look at Mahomes career playoff numbers. Utterly absurd.

I think that’s an oversimplification. Most NFL QBs would probably prefer a clean pocket to throw out of so they don’t have to scramble around. I was watching something I think a few weeks ago where they were talking about how much more Jackson was throwing from the pocket this year.

I think the difference is more in style of qb play when the play is breaking down. Some qbs are going to scramble around, extend plays, or take off themselves. Some will try to make a big throw, one they maybe shouldn’t. I think it’s part of the reason Goff is here and Stafford is in LA. McVay thought he needed a guy who could make that play when things were breaking down, and to their credit Stafford made the play en route to the Superbowl.

Now look at the Lions last offensive drive, specifically the first down pass. The play broke down, normally I think that’s a ball Goff throws away but game management said keeping the clock running is important. He doesn’t try to force up a big pass, he doesn’t try to significantly extend the play, he just runs as close to the line of scrimmage as he can get and goes down. From a game management perspective, it’s a smart play.

And to Slay’s point above, the reality is everyone looks and the “game manager” moniker as a derogatory comment, but having a qb who can consistently make smart decisions, distribute the ball, move the offense and put points on the board is actually a very good thing. That’s actually what the Lions offense is built for. The reality is you’re probably not going to have a lot of highlight real, how did he make that play (throwing or running) situations with Goff, it’s not his game, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a very good qb or can’t win big games.
