Brockers Is The Problem, Not Da Problem

This should be a game plan on how to be the Minnesota Timberwolves. Quality veterans can have a larger effect on a team than their on field stats would suggest.

We might save 3mil this year but we would create 2mil in dead cap next year as well. Keep him around for what he brings off the field and cut him in 2023. You save 8mil against the cap then.

I probably distracted from Brockers by using UDFA Demetrius Taylor to replace MB. A more realistic replacement already on the team is Bruce Hector. From purely a production standpoint: Would you rather have Brockers or Hector taking 30% of IDL snaps?

Brockers

Is there a MONSTER DT available next year? I’m talking a Donald/Suh level dude…

My dream scenario is that Goff improves in the way I want him to…and we can spend our picks on DT (priority) then RB.
Get some upgrades in talent and depth at LB and S after that.

…then go kick some ass.

I may have a perception problem.

The culture may not be fully established yet and may need another year of Brockers influence. Also it would be tough for Brad to eat another $6M after signing and cutting Perriman for $2M last year, especially if another DT was only marginally better than MB. In that case, a trade of some sort could save face for Brad.

Time will tell.

I’m Cuckoo for Coco Puffs, but perhaps not so cuckoo. I simply scooped BR by 19 days. :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

If Brockers flatlines in training camp again, perhaps the Chargers would trade their 2023 7th round pick to us and save us maybe $1M in dead cap.

From that article:

"As a team in the second year of a rebuild, the Detroit Lions may want to hold on to Michael Brockers because of his leadership qualities. Though he didn’t serve as a team captain in his first year with the club, the veteran defensive lineman held that honor during his tenure with the Los Angeles Rams.

"With that said, Brockers will head into his age-32 term. Additionally, he didn’t make a big splash in Detroit after the Lions acquired him from the Rams last offseason. As a starter in 16 contests, Brockers recorded 52 tackles, four for loss, a sack and five pressures. The Lions have younger, versatile defensive linemen who can fill Brockers’ role and potentially replicate or exceed those stats in their new even-man front.

ā€œIn the second round of the 2022 draft, the Lions selected Josh Paschal, who, at 6’3ā€, 268 pounds, can line up on the inside or rush from the edge. He’ll likely have a chance to play a decent number of snaps in the upcoming season. After two injury-plagued campaigns, Austin Bryant made notable contributions in 2021, recording 31 tackles, five for loss, 4.5 sacks and 10 pressures.

"The Lions can cut Brockers and allow their young defensive linemen to soak up meaningful snaps. If Brockers hits the market, he would make a good fit with the Los Angeles Chargers, who have made an attempt to patch up their porous, 30th-ranked run defense from the 2021 campaign by signing Sebastian Joseph-Day and Austin Johnson.

ā€œAs Brockers has done with the Rams and Lions, he would play in an odd-man front in a rotational role.ā€

There is no additional ā€œsavingsā€ gained by keeping Brockers this year.

He is due to make $7 million… and $4 million of it is guaranteed. Cut him now… and $3 million is saved.

Trade him??? …. $7 million is saved.

Keep him for a season… and zero is ā€œsavedā€.

I think Brockers stays but good chance Penisini is the one cut. I saw one poster say we would be taking a chance with one NT

We will not be in a 3 -4 often the D we will play doesn’t require a NT .
McNeill is used like last season as NT but he can play DT just as easy. He will fit in no problem an we can shift to 3-4 an he will fit also when we do.

Penisini last season 4 solo tackles that’s not good even for back up. 10 assists to be fair his 2020 season was ok. Maybe he was hurt late season but if not his play slipped bad an maybe was result of past of new DC .

Just think he could be a cut.

I was that poster. I made that comment forgetting about the 4-3 shift. You make a good point.

However: Who do you see lining up on goal line? Does seem a bit thin doesn’t it?

I don’t think so we may be short on weight but may get better penetration due to quickness on goal line.

That’s why I think Penisini stays.

Yup - more beef on the interior. Been calling for that since Suh left town.

What @LionsBlood and @LineBusy said respectfully.

Lots of young DL’s….need to have a vet presence….could he be cut? Sure, but my money if I’m betting is on him staying on at least one more year. The more likely persons cut could be a Cephus or a Julian Okwara……if JO gets hurt again in TC it’s a wrap….CYA!

@BigNatty …. you feeling ok??

LOL. really nice one

The Office Thats GIF

Brockers is SLOW, a 5.31 forty and a 26.5" vertical and that was 10 years ago. Dump him if there’s savings to be had.
He’s not made for a penetrating style defense.

I don’t think Cephus gets cut because of his cheap contract and his talent, but with the log jam at the position it’s certainly possible. ThIs staff would be Crazy to cut Julian. Last year amounted to what was basically a rookie year for him. He had 5 sacks in a rotational role and PFF credited him with the 24th best pass rush grade in the entire NFL. Not to mention he has some very very good measurables. He was a 1st round talent who slipped because of injuries. There is also two years left on his rookie contract and his brother is on the team as well. I personally think he fits as an excellent 3rd pass rusher who has 6-8 sack potential.

Good scoop. I think he stays one more year, but good scoop anyway.

This is weird that the Lions went from having possibly the worst WR group in the NFL just 7 months ago…

to having a ā€œlog jamā€ at WR that is apparently….
deep enough to keep den members from bitching about missing out on a ridiculous trade for a WR that the Falcons just landed.

Raiders casted promising WR Bryan Edwards aside after a decent 2nd year…. because they signed Mack Hollins, Demarcus Robinson, and Keelan Cole to 1-year deals…… even though Edwards has 2 years left on his rookie deal.

The crazy thing… is that Atlanta only paid the same as the Lions paid for Trinity Benson.
I’m not even crying a tear in a beer over the Benson trade… because Perriman checked out and left the roster in rough shape… but just pointing out that it would have really cool to get a guy like Edwards for the same price instead.
