Broncos to bench Russell Wilson

To cut Russell Wilson before the 2024 season and save the $37 Million salary for 2024 from becoming guaranteed would involve $85 Million in dead cap. Wow.

The record to be broken would be:

QB Matt Ryan (Falcons): $40.525 millionThe record for dead money the Eagles set with Carson Wentz last year at $33,820,611 was shattered when the Falcons traded Ryan to the Colts for a 2022 third-round pick in March.

At which point the owners ought to can George Paton for gross dereliction of duty.

No kidding.

Keep Sean Payton, get rid of George Paton.

It always felt like Seattle won that trade. Russ was a different player in Seattle towards the end.

I wonder if there is another QB needy team that would trade for him knowing full and well he doesn’t cook anymore. Hes EZ bake at best.

No doubt

Denver is 16th in PGG. They have some good players but the offense isn’t super talented. Tough break for Wilson. Not the same player he was but there’s definitely a little scapegoating here.

It seems that way. He’s been far better in 2023 than he was in 2022.

Seems Sean Payton’s not big on accepting blame, amirite?

It’s pretty amazing how different Dan and his mentor are in some ways.

the problem in Denver isn’t so much the offense as it is the defense.

outside of Patrick Surtain, who would you want from their defense? can’t think of many.

The problem is that even when Russ was good he was bad in the short and intermediate middle of the field which is imperative to Payton’s offense

If there is one thing that Payton screwed up bad this year on offense it was not leveraging Mims’ explosiveness.

Russ getting “acquitted” after the 2023 season is over

I think Russ gets 2024

Russ is a such a fake phony. Give Pete Carroll credit he knew when to move on. Geno has been better than Russ the past 2 years. Plus they got a ton of draft picks and saved money.

If the Broncos cut him before the 5th day of the league year, they avoid $37 Million in guaranteed salary for 2024.

And, if they’re not playing him to avoid injury, he’s essentially getting the Matt Ryan treatment–benched to avoid any injury guarantee.

Apparently, he’s familiar with the Belichick mantra:

Releasing a player a year too early rather than a year too late (but it takes a bit of ruthlessness to practice).

But, Carroll did it far better and actually turned that “one year too early” player into a bevy of assets via trade.

Didn’t Russ actually get the ball rolling?

Looks like the ass chewing Peyton gave Russ on the sideline of our game with them was more than heat of the moment, or at least not in the moment and overwith.

More than a little. That’s ugly. Echoes of what McVay did to Goff. Wilson deserves better than that.
