Went to a poker tournament today at Hollywood casino in Columbus. Saw this guy wearing a Campbell jersey and asked to take a picture. Unfortunately I didn’t get to interview him to get the story. MCDC is everywhere.
No-limit, I suppose? How many entries? The buy-in? How did it go? Maybe you’re still playing…
NL. $60 buy in. About 100 guys. Made it to about top 50. Went all in with AK with two callers, A5 and A7. Two 5s flopped. Ouch. Still had short stack. Went all in with Q10 against K10 (same guy with A5 in previous hand). Flopped a Q high straight. Q comes on the river (3 outs - 6% chance) and he hits a K high straight. Brutal way to go out.
Sometimes it be like that.
My favorite tournaments are about thatt size with a $60 buy-in. With 100 people mostly unfamiliar people, you’ve got to pick up quickly what people are doing and capable of doing from scant details. I like that process.
All you can do is get your money in when you’re a favorite and hope the fates are kind.
That’s it. Play the odds and hope you hit some early hands and build your stack. Some pretty loose play out there today by the crowd. I folded a couple of winners at the beginning and was surprised by the hands players were shoving all in with.
There’s always a few players that are loose and look good early on because they’re overplaying their hands. Often they only have that one speed, so you can get it back and more later on. Luck can make anyone look good though.
My standard approach is to be visibly conservative at the low levels, watching how other tablemates are playing, Then leverage that conservative image later with marginal hands in late position.
I haven’t played in a casino for a while, but now I’m thinking about it again. I play in a weekly home poker game, which has a couple of pretty bad players. It’s largely social, so I make sure not to play my A game with them.
Very similar to how I play. Always fun trapping the loose whales. I’ve played a lot (A LOT) of online poker but not a ton of live games recently. I play with a group of out of state buddies on PokerNow every few months. With Venmo and cameras it works out pretty well. Used to play a live weekly game a number of years back but some of the guys quit because they weren’t winning. I do enjoy playing though.
Niiiice!
