Carlton Davis: Wanted to come back, contract language drove him away

I think ‘wanted’ to come back is a bit disingenuous. It is more like he ‘would have’ come back. Guys that ‘want’ to come back to a team aren’t held up by contract nuances. Suh ‘would have’ come back to the team too if we would have given him a stupid max contract.

Yeah, that’s a bit more than some nuance about language.

He signed a far more lucrative deal with NE. Good for him, but I don’t know why he wants to make it sound like something else.

edit: I’m an idiot, see below👇

It probably was something else. Davis said money wasn’t the issue, so we probably had a similar total contract value, but less money early and maybe less guarantees. The contract we gave to DJ Reed isn’t necessarily the contract offer that we made to Davis. We may have had more incentives in Davis’ offer and the timing of the cash payments are probably different. The Lions have historically paid cash fairly ratably over the length of the contract. Where Reed was getting 35% in year one (typical for the Lions structures), Davis got 46%. That’s pretty significant.

Davis’ agent probably asked the Lions to modify their contract and they held firm. Without knowing the details, it’s hard to say who’s right or wrong.

Duh. Of course you’re right.

Davis didn’t play very well starting off the season. He looked better with CJ Stroud throwing passes to him in the playoffs though.

Bad signing he sucks, let not for get how bad he was and is beside them first 4 games, witch I believe you are exaggerating some I would say he didn’t suck the first four games but very good ?

The OP has a note from Birkett that directly addresses this, saying money wasn’t the issue at all.

Well, when we needed Carlton Davis most, in the playoffs, he wasn’t available. He sucks too.

Unless you were being sarcastic. Then, I may laugh. Neither could be relied on down the stretch.

So we remember Davis fondly now?

It’s so hard to keep up with you guys

I remember when they traded a 3rd round pick for him, and signed Amik, and traded up to draft Arnold in the 1st round, then double downed and drafted Rakestraw in the 2nd. They also still had Moseley. I remember thinking that’s way over kill. The CB’s are now loaded! That all became mostly nothing.

CDIII was a very solid player. He played hard. Broke his jaw and was out come playoff time. People talking crap about Davis have short term memory. I get annoyed by fans who are week to week fans. It would have been nice to re-sign him. Who knows what happened.

Reed was good with the Jets. He was solid when he first started here. Was horrible when he got back from injury. Hopelly he can bounce back.

we all hyped the ■■■■ out of him too.

What a :poop:

I have a hard time feeling sorry for a guy playing with no mouth guard who breaks his jaw. Branch and Jamo never wear their mouth guard either. Not very smart
