Centers

It is said we need a new/different Center this offseason, but I’ve spent some time looking for their rankings -and very few sites have them-SO I ask all of you, IF we draft a Center…Who do you want?

all my pre draft items I use , haven’t arrived, so I really can’t give my preferred option-yet- each offseason I use the same stuff to determine who I want, help make Mocks , and after studying each prospect, I can make opinions based off that-otherwise, I don’t “know” who these guys are or what factors make me want them in the draft or in Detroit.

There is tons of info in the draft talk thread about centers and the oline options overall.

You should have spent more time reading that and less time bitching about it.

what was I “bitching about in that thread? BTW I read stuff sometimes two or three times-before I comment on them. I was -defending Anzalone staying, other than that , I was complaining about our weather in Michigan.

Gotta admit that I usually wait for the underwear Olympics before I get too started in this. For centers I am not worried about their 40 time so much, but the RAS score should still be a part of the eval.

Sam Hecht is my current favorite value, but I reserve the right to change my mind. He was really something at the Senior Bowl.

Others: Connor Lew, Pat Coogan, Jake Slaughter, Matt Gulbin, Logan Jones, Jager Burton, James Brockermeyer.

Potential converts: Brian Parker, Chase Bisontis, Trey Zuhn, and I’ve even seen Spencer Fano’s name floated if his arms are really only 32 inches long.

All of them have strengths and weaknesses, but personally I have a really hard time imagining Hecht won’t at least be above average, and he might be better than that. He’s in that Dalman style of center, and we already know that style works in our offense from how well Dalman played in Chicago.

I was just reading about him yesterday. Sounded like he kicked some serious ass during practices. Probably gonna go a lot earlier in the draft now. What round you thinking?

Well he’s not a typical body beautiful guy, 6’4, 297 with arms on the short side (32 inches). That’s why he’s more Dalmon-esque. Of course just watching him with the naked eye you’d never guess he was a pound less than 315. He really doesn’t struggle with size as much as you’d think - very strong core - except against the big NT nasties every iOL struggles with.

And he’s a maestro at the 2nd-level, which is something I’m weighing a lot more heavily this year. Tons of experience too, I think I heard 50+ starts at C?

So that’s my long-winded way of saying… 3/4th round?

Definitely an important skill to get to some linebackers for a center. Gibbs only needs a small crease to explode long runs

I like the idea of drafting an experienced center and just keeping Tate at Right guard where he has basically played his whole life.

Me too. Going into the year with a rookie is dicey of course, but it also works all the time. The Seahawks are in the Super Bowl starting a guy who was a UDFA last year. So not technically a rookie, but this is his first year playing, so not much different. And of course Zabel starts for them too, and he’s a rookie. The Pats are starting two rookies on their OL, including one of last year’s top C prospects - Jared Wilson - at RG.

Interesting I didn’t realize how many young guys starting on the super bowl olines. It would sure be nice to find a good lineman without using a 1st rounder.

Decker, Sewell and Rags were all 1st rounders for example. Great picks but it would be great to find a mid round gem

Agreed. And most teams are able to, especially along the interior. I don’t think any of the good Philly teams ever had 1st rounders along the interior of their line. Well, not anyone they paid a 1st rounder for. They had Becton last year, but they got him for cheap after he busted out with the Jets. Conversely the Saints have spent a ton there and haven’t been good for a while.

He looks like a Center. The rules committee should pass something such that he is forced to wear the white medical tape on both wrists.

I could see Hect go late 1st to early 2nd. but I’m not sure what the run on Centers will be.
