Just learned that our 20+ year old system was leaking carbon monoxide. Anyway, now is the time.
Cheers!

Did you see ghosts? It’s speculated that many of the ghost sightings in old houses are hallucinations from carbon monoxide leaks
That was a month and a half ago for some of us…
Just saying.![]()
Not to make light of the leak. That’s scary.
I’m an HVAC tech and this is something that I tell all my customers. If it’s one thing I harp on people for it’s this.
I see Bigfoot when I sniff carbon monoxide.
And, just how often do you see Bigfoot?
More than most, but not as much as the evil government scientists do.
Get a CO detector imho
Fixed.
I love the smell of carbon monoxide in the morning!
I hear these new AC units they shifted and switched to some highly flammable gas
HVAC people I know have mentioned there concerns about this…
Thoughts?
Obviously get a CO detector.
Often you can see signs of a leak in the flames. If the flames are straight and uniform, that’s a good sign. If the flames are roiling and chaotic, you likely have a leak.
We had a scare few years ago. The detector was beeping and it was loud. Luckily we just needed to replace it.
This. I just moved into a 100 year old house. I put CO/fire detector combos on every floor as well as a fire detector in about 8 other areas of the house. All linked with voice alters that tell me which alarm was triggered. Scared the crap out of all the animals in the house when I tested the system. ![]()
Was the heat exchanger all rusted out? That was the case with my old furnace.
Propane for refrigerant. In Europe it is becoming more prevalent. The big concern is the boom factor. But it is highly efficient and cheap and environment friendly.
Nice timing. I got quoted at $7,200 for
Bryant Single system:
Basic furnace replacement : 80k BTU 18” wide
3 Ton Basic Furnace
96% Efficient / Single Stage ECM Furnace
Parts: 10 Years
Labor: 5 Years
Are they too high?
Yeah the problem is that they’re not sensitive enough to catch a small leak until it becomes a decent sized leak. At least from what the Nice-Man-In-Uniform told me.
Get ahold of me Nate and i can get you my buddy’s #, he owns a hvac company in Grandville. It cost me $8500 for a new furnace and AC installed.
I lost a family member to carbon monoxide when I was younger and as a result I have always had a detector. They do work but keep in mind you get what you pay for. Some are far better than others.
Also to those hunters out there. Heaters in your blinds can also give off carbon monoxide. Make sure to check yours prior to the season. Or just put the loudest detector you can buy and put it in your blind while you hunt. The deer won’t mind.
