Lions face renewed concern over Chiefs tackle Jawaan Taylor’s cheating tactics against Aidan Hutchinson, what’s being done to stop it

The extra deep set combined with a full second head start before the snap in his drop back makes for some really effective neutralization of Hutch’s speed.

if I’m the DE I just see how he lines up look down the line at the ref and point at him. after the play say I’m going to keep doing that when he lines up illegally. If you make it obvious to the cameras that you’re telling the refs it starts getting talked about loudly.

Yep. OR, the ref’s just wait until a critical time in the 4th quarter to call it like last time and it’s even worse.

The fact that the Chiefs haven’t replaced Taylor despite him being a flag magnet tells me that they see enough of an advantage to justify the penalties. It’s not going to stop. My counter would be to use his head start against him and exploit the natural gap it creates between him and the guard. That looks like a pretty good blitzing lane to me if you put someone behind Hutch and give them the option to go after Mahomes or cover the gap so he can’t step into it while Taylor pushes Hutch wide. Barnes, Branch, and Anzalone can all be trusted to make the right decision in that situation. Campbell can as well, but I’d want to keep him more towards the middle where he can see the whole field and get to the right spot to make the stop.

I’m in agreement with having at least one player on defense watch his position and point it out just like players do a false start. If somebody is jumping and pointing it’s hard for the refs to ignore it all game.

If you guys want to hear something crazy, there are plenty of Chiefs fans here who actually blame the Lions and that game for ruining Jawaan Taylor’s Chiefs career. They love to say that Taylor wasn’t “cheating”, he was lining up like a bunch of tackles do and they never get penalties! My personal favorite is, he doesn’t false start, he just gets set very quick so it looks like a false start. Classic! :joy:
So, after the big uproar during the 2023 season opener and even the announcers pointing out how often it was happening, they said that made the refs hyper focused on Taylor and the constant penalties severely limited his effectiveness. Even now, plenty of Chiefs fans will outright tell you that Jawaan Taylor is actually a good RT, its just the penalties that are a problem. It never dawns on them that the reason for the constant holding calls, false starts, and illegal formation penalties are all caused because he has to cheat to get an advantage to make up for a talent deficiency. If the guy was a really good tackle, he would line up normally and win that way. Also, if he was really good at RT, Mahomes wouldn’t spend all of his time constantly running for his life.

The crazy part about that call was to this day, it’s clear that penalty was only called on that last drive because of the constant roasting from the announcers, the replays and social media blowing it up of how often Taylor was doing it. You know that the league got involved and said we’ve got to do something. The funny part was, a lot of people asked why the Lions weren’t making a bigger deal about it. Collinsworth on the broadcast said that for the Lions, Taylor’s illegal alignment was tipping off pass plays. The Lions knew it was cheating, but that cheating was giving them an advantage so they rolled with it.

You made your post while I am making mine, so I’ll just add here that the reason the Chiefs haven’t replaced Taylor is because they paid him an assload of money to get him from Jacksonville, where he was a penalty magnet there as well. Now that Taylor’s contract is a bit more manageable and the penalties have become such a critical issue, it’s been widely talked about here that Jaylon Moore, who signed from the 49ers, was about to take Taylor’s job until he got hurt. Moore was originally signed in case Simmons wasn’t ready or didn’t play well. However, Simmons has done so well that the Chiefs started practicing Moore at RT until he got hurt. He is supposed to be back very soon, and this upcoming game could expedite that move.

We simply need sacks and Pass deflection frim all the other players on the Big D

Let him cheat. He still kind of sucks.

Well, we’re still talking about it, two years later. I think the answer is obvious.

Nothing!

He signed a contract for $80M/4yrs and because of a rolling guarantee, they were stuck with him for $60M/3yrs. He’s owed $20M in 2026 and it’ll be interesting to see if they cut him.

Honestly this is sort of true. Look at any line and the tackles are the furthest back, as far back as they can go and still get away with it. Taylor just pushes it to extremes because he’s not very good.

I agree. If you can do it all game long and only get it called once makes it worth it. I believe the Lions take the same approach with our secondary. Play man coverage, get physical and be grabby. It just hurts more when they do call it because the defensive holding comes with an automatic first down and it is usually when you thought you had a 3 and out to get off the field.

If the refs let you get away with it, is it really cheating or just taking advantage of the system?

Yep nothings illegal if you aren’t punished for it.

While I agree…that’s just the problem. Enforce basic rules.

It’s the main reason I stopped watching the nba… They didn’t enforce basic rules. It became unwatchable. Watching KC play I feel very similar.

The best lies have a little bit of truth.

You are right, every tackle does little things. I’ve seen a number of times Decker has gotten a quick step on a snap and it wasn’t called. Lane Johnson is probably the worst at it. We’ve also seen the whole Philly line both line up illegally and false start horribly doing Tush Pushes.
You are also 100% correct on why Taylor gets busted for it so often. He does it the most egreiously, and most often. If he does line up correctly, he most often gets a holding penalty as soon as he gets beat wide. Bad football players often have to resort to breaking the rules to have a chance to stay competitive. There is a reason why bad teams often have the most flags thrown against them, they are full of bad football players who have to push the envelope in order to have a chance to compete.

I hope we wrote a letter to the league asking them to keep a close eye on it.
