A bit off topic guys, I admit. This post can die instantly if needs be. But they brought this up today on 97.1 and I have hated this topic for the vast majority of my sports watching life.
Today was: “UConn could beat these Pistons.”
Before it has been: “The best Alabama team ever could beat the 0-16 Lions.”
And I have had people argue it with me in the past. Just stop. No collegiate basketball team or football team is beating the worst pro team in the league. Even if half of them are sick. Argue it.
Agree? Or am I just bringing up a topic that is blatantly obvious to anyone with an ounce of sports knowledge?
The only way it’d be possible is if the college team had someone like Jordan on it. You know dropping 30 to 40 per game. Still would be insanely tough.
College allstars beat the NFL 9 X. Those were the days.
College All Stars have defeated the NFL champions in the past. Just check out the mighty Green Bay Packers coached by Vince Lombardi himself. Out of 41 games, the college team won 9 times and tied twice. What would it be like if the college and the NFL football team played against each other?Aug 27, 2023
Zero chance with today’s NFL. The game is way different. The NFL offense is just so precise that no college defense could stop them. And then the NFL defenses are crazy fast.
The game between the college and NFL is much different today.
This is one my favorite topics BTW. Because it is so insane to think a college team today could compete with a NFL team.
Some other issues you have to realize. Back when the college teams did OK against the Pro teams, they had older players. Now the most of the best athletes or players in the college game leave after 3 years. So the whole analysis is silly.
Which is another thing to chew on. Realize that Saban and his Bama teams and now the Georgia teams are winning with 2nd and 3rd year players. They have to teach these players schemes and techniques at an accelerate rate. And notice how many elite athletes UM had on Defense on this Natty team. Hairball is nutz but he can put together a team and recruit. I will be very curious to how things go for him with the Chargers.
For the football side of things, its hard for people to fathom the difference between NFL football and college football. Its not just about NFL teams being all-star college squads. It cuts much deeper than that. NFL coaches and players have every moment of every day to think about football. They don’t have to spend their time and effort on anything else if they don’t want to.
It ends up in a league where each team has a solid handle on what the other team is doing. So its all about execution. The analogy I use for what its like to be in the NFL vs college is this. A college football player dominates his competition on his way to becoming an NFL player. Now imagine he gets to the NFL and gains 5 years of experience. He is 5 years smarter and 5 years better in every way. Now you dump that same player back in one of his college games. But he is not blind to what’s going to happen. Not only is he 5 years better as a player, he has already played in this particular game. So he knows what is coming. Imagine how insane that guy is going to dominate in that football game. That’s what being an NFL football player is like…multiplied many times over.
Great example. By the time an NFL player is five years in, he will have already forgotten more about the game of football than any college player currently knows.
There is simply no plausible argument to make in favor of the college team. Best team in the country would would be down 30 points by halftime to whatever team has the #1 pick in the league that year.
