Courious, where would you rank Goff now amoung the top ten NFL QB's?

People keep saying that, but, there are 8 teams left in the playoffs and 2 have mobile QB’s.
It’s a fallacy!
The NFL is a pocket passer league and has been since the 60’s.
The Sports Media would love for it to become a mobile QB’s league, but, that is just not the reality.

while the rankings can be a fun exercise, ultimately they are only a part of the entertainment. So here is my opinion and the exercise that got me there.

I put Goff in the 7-15 range right now for rest of career. I think 9 is fair depending on how you value the young QBs.

If Tier 1 is: Mahomes, Jackson
and Tier 2 is: Burrow, Herbert, Hurtz, and Allen
Then Tier 3 maybe includes Goff and other solid QBs and young and improving QBs that you can sort the ranking for.

so let’s see, here is where they were rated on September 8. We can use this to figure who we would trade for regarding REST OF CAREER. You may tempt me with Aaron Rodgers for one year, but not beyond that so he is a solid no.

  1. Patrick Mahomes-Yes
  2. Joe Burrow-Interesting, injury makes you question future. But I think I would.
  3. Josh Allen-Yes.
  4. Jalen Hurts-Interesting. Probably yes.
  5. Justin Herbert-Interesting. Probably yes.
  6. Aaron Rodgers-no, but this is age
  7. Lamar Jackson-Yes
  8. Trevor Lawrence-no, but interesting
  9. Dak Prescott-no, I hate Dallas. Not exactly great analysis.
  10. Tua Tagovailoa-no, but interesting
  11. Kirk Cousins-no
  12. Deshaun Watson-no
  13. Matthew Stafford-no
  14. Derek Carr-no
  15. Geno Smith-no
  16. Kyler Murray-no
  17. Jared Goff-
  18. Daniel Jones-no
  19. Mac Jones-no
  20. Russell Wilson-no
  21. Justin Fields-no
  22. Brock Purdy-no
  23. Kenny Pickett-no
  24. Jimmy Garoppolo-no
  25. Ryan Tannehill-no
  26. Jordan Love-no, but interesting
  27. Baker Mayfield-no
  28. Bryce Young-no
  29. CJ Stroud-no
  30. Anthony Richardson-no
  31. Desmond Ridder-no
  32. Sam Howell-no

Probably the least mobile QB ever, has the most rings, and they all came in the last 25 years, with the last only 3 years ago.

Out of all the responses in your list the one I looked for was Stroud I lean yes on him and might flip him and Burrows on your list as I love Burrows talent but the injuries man…the injuries…

Hurts is another one I might say no on.

I get it and the I did the gymnastics regarding all 3.

I think Burrows and Hurtz both get healthy next year and are back with a normal chance of future injuries. I just couldn’t say yes to Stroud ONLY because of the small sample size. You could put Richardson into a conversation as well, but the small sample size makes me reluctant as well.

I also prefer the tier system. But I also put a pretty heavy weight on knowing how to win games. Which means Herbert for instance is gonna drop.

But I have it like this:

Tier 1 - Mahomes, Burrow
Tier 2 - Lamar (I need to see him do it in playoffs), Hurts, Allen, Goff, Stafford (but he is done), Cousin (ultimate game manager), Tua (I think he has done enough)
Tier 3- Herbert, Stroud, Purdy (again need more data), Love (climbing), Geno, Dak, Lawrence, Mayfield?

Those are the 16 Qbs that I think are worth discussing.

Tua and Cousin may be really Tier 3.
And before anyone gets all sideways about Goff. He now has the 3rd most playoff wins of any QB left in the Playoffs. And has played in a Super Bowl. The only other one left is Mahomes that has played in a Super Bowl.

So you have:
Mahomes- 12 wins 2 SB and 1 appearance (3 total)
Allen 5 wins
Goff - 4 wins 1 SB appearance
Mayfield - 2
Purdy - 2
Lamar - 1
Stroud - 1
Love - 1

I am not sure how Goff is not in the top half of these 16.

If Goff can be the QB on the winning team 3 more times this year he will instantly become the greatest QB of all time, not just this year or right now.

2? Did you just mean big time running threats. Mahomes is mobile. Love is mobile.

Jared Goff is the least mobile QB in the field. It is something that we have to work around. Fortunately as a team we are well equipped to do so.

Lamar - Running Freak
Allen - Running Freak
Mahomes - Mobile Plus
Stroud - mover

Goff - A statue
Purdy - a mover
Mayfield - Mobile
Love - Mobile

I think the Lions are safe until the Super Bowl. Yeah Mayfield will scramble for a couple of first downs. But he typically will not roll for a 50 burger. Same with Purdy. Love seems to have a bit better wheels but a throw first guy regardless. It is not until you get to the Ravens and Bills that you run into RBs playing QB.

Mahomes-yes
Burrow-yes
Lamar-yes
Stafford-no (he just got beat)
Allen-maybe, never followed him.
Hurts - no
Dak-doesn’t impress me (lucky he’s in Dallas)

With that noodle arm… I’d say 30th or so.

Jared Goff is the only QB I want wearing Honolulu Blue and Silver.

To me it comes down to how much weight to put into actual performance vs potential for performance. Take Jalen Hurts vs Goff for instance. Everyone considers the last 2 years in LA and year 1 with the Lions to be “bad years” for Goff. But statistically, those are around Jalen Hurts best years. And Jalen hasn’t touched Jared’s best years yet. Here are the stats lumped together in ascending order:

Jalen Hurts (yards) - 3,144…3,701…3,858
JG 19 to 21 (yards) - 3,245…3,952…4,638
Jared (best years) - 4,575…4,638…4,688

Jalen Hurts (TDs) - 16…22…23
JG 19 to 21 (TDs) - 19…20…22
Jared (best years) - 29…30…32

Jalen Hurts (INTs) - 6…9…15
JG 19 to 21 (INTs) - 8…13…16
Jared (best years) - 7…7…8

You have to consider things like age as well. I’d consider Stafford a better QB than Goff but not when you consider Goff turned 29 in October, Stafford turns 36 in 3 weeks.

Let’s look at statistics:

QBR: Goff 11th
Yards: 2nd
TDs: 4th
TD/int ratio: 12th
Completion %: 5th

Record 21-7 last 28 games.

One of only 8 QBs left.

Top 5? Probably not.

Top 10: I think so

I think it is very possible that he signs a deal that makes him the best ‘bang for buck’ qb in the nfl.

Tua? I seriously question that, guy crumbled against every good team.

Mahomes, Lamar, Allen and Burrow are clearly ahead of Goff. Herbert needs to win something first before he gets all these accolades, Hurts took a big step back this season, Lawrence…I’m really starting to wonder about him, Purdy, Love and Stroud are all on a major upward trajectory. Stafford is still really good, Dak despite the playoffs failure is still a top 10 guy, Cousins is in the convo when healthy.

Right now? I’d put Goff in the 5-10 range. Top 4 are clear but after that, there’s around 6-7 guys that have an argument for 5 with Goff in that discussion. Really hard to rank these 2nd tier guys tbh.

Biggest issue with Burrow is injury history, not talent, the injury history makes question wanting Burrow as I think his early injuries were more than what Stafford dealt with.

Dak? I seriously disagree with that. The guy is a deer in headlights in the big moments, constantly.
The others I have no argument with although, considering age, I don’t think Stafford is clearly ahead.
