It all worked out for the best. If we draft Witherspoon, we lose out on Gibbs, LaPorta, and Branch. It doesn’t matter if Spoon becomes a HOF CB, he’s not worth those 3.
Witherspoon would needed to have gotten by Seattle. For Dan to discuss this, there must have been talk of moving up. Was a trade-up discussion part of last year’s Inside The Den? Did Dan reveal what the ask was? They had seen Witherspoon as someone worthy of trading up for, but the price was too high?
The conversation doesn’t make sense unless there was a trade offer. He wasn’t there at our pick.
I think the original plan was to take Witherspoon, then move up for Gibbs. The trade discussed was moving up from the second 1st rounder. Seattle takes Witherspoon and Detroit trades down instead.
We picked 6, no?
Witherspoon taken at 5?
No one thought Seattle would take him. That was a surprise to everyone, because Pete and Schneider had never taken a CB that high (maybe the 3rd round was the highest?). So I think we loved him purely as part of our study at the 6 spot. Highly unlikely there were any trade-up talks for him (maybe for Will Anderson though, who Brad purportedly loved).
Correct.
so it’s really just a statement that they liked him at 6, not that there were talks of moving up.
and in the end, he’s happy with how it fell.
got it, thanks.
This is 100% correct… They were going to jump ahead of 14 for Gibbs if they took Witherspoon at 6.
Before the draft Gambling odds had Witherspoon as the Lions pick. tBH I think Seattle taking him was a surprise, and I’m pretty confident had Seattle went a different direction he would of been the Lions pick at 6
The original plan for that draft was to take Witherspoon at 6 and trade up from 18 to take Gibbs. I think in hindsight reality ended up better than the OG plan
Yeah, I was overthinking it. Having the choice (which they never did) isn’t a requirement to make the point he was. A hypothetical of Witherspoon available at 6 is where the comparison comes from.
We knew this already. Not anything new here
Curious why Dan is mentioning this? Will this motivate our guys?
Dan always talks up the opponents’ best players. Just showing respect for the best opposing players.
