Another great MCDC interview - I can’t get enough of this guy in the media. Long hair, actual pet lions, 100% Dan Campbell.
Man another cool interview for sure.
Although I wonder when people are going to stop asking him about his introductory press conference. He’s gotta be kind of tired of hearing the same variations of questions about it… but that also speaks to how epic it was.
When the Lions become a winning team, they are going to go through whatever accomplishments they have and say “take us back to that first press conference, and how do you see that was setting the tone for a team that bites off kneecaps?”
After hearing Patricia/Caldwell/Schwartz/Mooch/Marinelli say the same canned responses to things, MCDC is a breath of fresh air. Love listening to his interviews . . .
I think you should get extra bonus star points if you sat through the whole intro press conference.
Maybe I’m the only one with the attention span of a child but after about 4 minutes I had to stop and what was it, 112 minutes or something? About the length of Shawshank lol.
At least he’s not asking what he has to do to get fired around here, saying “he doesn’t coach that stuff”, riding in on the motorcycle picking wind over ball raising the bar, hiding “Easter Eggs” for players to find during practice to have a little fun, keep low pad level pounding the rock, or heckling pro bowler’s admiration for their peers/colleagues.
I guess Wayne and the Jim’s get a pass for now.
Right now Dan is my FAVORITE kind of Lions coach, one that hasn’t played a game yet. Innocent until proven guilty ha!
It is definitely a different vibe from all that stuff.
Seems before we wanted to hire the smartest guy in the room. Now we have a group of experienced football people that can speak to what their doing through experience of being on a team or in the game (or both) for decades. They seem to work together and hold themselves accountable.
Also, our HC is a mix of the Dude and Chuck Norris and a little bit of Whoopie Goldberg from Sister Act. If he’s REALLY that combo look out, even Tavai will start playing like Urlacher.
Dam, my kool-aids gone.
Super Bowl here we come!!!
Amen to that! It is refreshing listening to him because he comes off as a genuine person, not someone trying to blow smoke up your ass, trying to sound smarter than you but not explaining it because “you wouldn’t understand,” or just giving a company line.
When there have been questions he doesn’t want to answer or won’t answer, he’s very up front about that. I respect that. But he also will open up about things he knows will have no impact on teams getting an “inside track” on him. He’s smarter than that and knows better…
Him and Holmes have been a breath of fresh air. Let’s see it translate to games in the W column!
Also one other thing I wanted to point out from this interview, and I know he’s mentioned it before but he elaborated on it more here… the alpha male thing. Basically it comes down to being secure in yourself as a person. That is the honest truth. I can still be the boss and put my foot down, but I can also be wise enough to know others know more than me and to listen to them and that isn’t me showing “weakness.” He understands what a lot of other “men” don’t. He’s secure in himself and wants to surround himself with the best people because it will make the group/team better. And when someone else has a thought or idea it’s not a “that’s not how I do things” it’s a “ok let’s talk about it” and if it’s something that works then awesome! We all are better for it!
Love that he’s talking about the “human element” of the game, and considering that as much as, if not more than analytics.
Yes, we will now call this approach of blending the human element with advanced analytics as “Danalytics”.
His comments on trusting the coaching staff were what impressed me the most… along with being man enough to admit and actually comprehend where he f’d up in past situations. That staff has some brilliant, and that word is not an exaggeration, football minds. It’s refreshing to have that knowledge behind a minimal experience head coach. He seems ready and willing to use that security blanket when needed, but he’ll also be the first one to leap on the grenade. Have a feeling that even if we go 3-14 it’s gonna be one of the most entertaining seasons in a lonnng time.
Great aspect of this interview as well. Look at our coaching staff! Former HC as OC, highly respected players as assistant coach and DC, DB coach, not to mention Dom Capers as an advisor…
It’s quite possible we may have the best overall coaching staff in the league. Yes the proof will be in the results, but look at all these former players who have had success in similar coaching positions in the league. I think this alone gets us an extra win or two this year regardless of our skill level.
I’m going to have to say something about this. Dan Campbell WILL blow smoke up your ass. But with him there seems to be a distinction. If he’s blowing fake theoretical smoke up your ass, he gives you a wink and a nod that lets you know he’s blowing theoretical smoke up your ass. I saw one of his early interviews where they asked him a question he wasn’t able to answer at the time (I think it was Stafford related before the trade was announced) and as he dodged the question he said something like “you like how I dodged that and changed subjects?”
But the other part of Dan Campbell is…any other time he’s blowing smoke up your ass…its legit. Its not theoretical. Its not hypothetical. Your ass should be heating up because smoke is literally being blown up your ass.
This is where I would post a Sasha Grey ass jiggle GIF, but apparently that’s frowned upon. Thanks Bin Laden.
Please post it

I remember being introduced to Denise Milani on this board some 4,000 or so moons ago. Ahhh the good ol’ days. Whomever that was, big, big, big thanks
Lol an excellent distinction as well and I agree.
I think what we can agree on is there is a certain sincerity to what he says one way or another that is very appealing thus far
He’s a younger Bruce Arians.

He looks like Bill Cowher with a go-T.
Whoa now, this is a family site.
You know. Except for all of the language and aggression.
