When Dan Campbell watches David Montgomery run, he sees shades of two of the greatest running backs of all-time.
“Freaking Earl Campbell, man,” Dan Campbell said Wednesday. "Earl Campbell ran like crazy. Walter Payton ran like crazy and would not go down. So, anyway, I think he’s rare, I think we’re fortunate to have him, and I can tell you this, the O-line loves blocking for that guy and anybody that plays with him. I mean, you want to talk about inspiring? That inspires you to want to block.”
Asked about Dan Campbell invoking two Hall-of-Fame backs to describe David Montgomery’s running style, Scottie Montgomery said he’d defer to the head coach but noted the power back also has the longest run by a Lion the past two seasons at 75 yards.
“It’s fun to watch because you can see him make a move on somebody like he did at the Chargers and go have the longest run in our room – you hear me Jahmyr; the longest run in our room to this day – and then at the same time you see him catch the checkdown and lower his shoulder and still have enough,” Scottie Montgomery said. “There’s not a lot of chances to see that type of style where it did used to show up a lot more.”
