I see Bree’s/Goff as a great comparison. I’m not sure who I’d rather have in their prime, though Goff may just now be hitting his prime.
From the Greg Laundry-Bill Munson days, to many forgettable QB’s in between, we are living in a time where we have one of the greats playing for our very own Lions. Who’s alive on this board to ever see a better Lions QB?
Having said that, I must confess, I was very anti JG his first year with us. I was WRONG! My apologies for the numerous Goof comments.

I would rather have had Brees. Now that said, I love JG and I definitely think the best could still be ahead of him.
I’ve always seen the comparison between the 2… that’s why the Saints invested so much in the Guards for Drew.

Me too. In fairness, Goff’s body language and play wasn’t very good his 1st year. Rams were a darn good team and him being traded to the pathetic Lions was surely a tough mental battle at the time. We didn’t have much talent which was a huge factor. Even DC said in some pressers we needed better qb play. And he did start playing better once we demoted Lynn and Campbell took over.
As we added more talent, Goff’s confidence just seemed to keep growing and he has gotten better pretty much every year. So glad to have him.
Thankfully we were patient and didn’t just move on which teams do all the time in the nfl.
I think the turning point for Goff was when the Lions picked up Josh Reynolds. They played together in LA so they had instant chemistry, and I think Goff appreciated the fact the Lions weren’t just blaming him for the bad things, they were actively trying to help him by getting him someone he was familiar with. After Reynolds joined the Lions, combined with more chemistry with Amon Ra and Hockenson, the Lions actually started showing a decent passing game to go with a decent running game.
Yep and even then we started 2022 with a 1 and 6 record. Goff’s first 25 games with the Lions were about as tough as they could be from a winning perspective. But we finished 2022 real strong. Goff himself said knocking GB out of a possible playoff spot in GB the last game of the season is when he really started believing that this team could do something special.
Goff’s mental toughness might be one of his top skills. His college team sucked, the Rams sucked when he got there, and the Lions were a disaster when he arrived. Been a lot adversity to overcome and he keeps doing it.
Hmmm… I was a longtime Rams fan and was done with them after what they did with Goff. (I won’t ever root for a McVay-led team again.)
I don’t remember body language issues, but between the totally dispiriting context of The Trade and the s***show that the Lions were, esp in the first half of that 1st year, I think Jared’s play was pretty commendable.
The fact that his results started trending sharply up w/the arrival of that world beater, Josh Reynolds, and the turnover at OC, says everything about what he was dealing with before that.
Goff had an 85.3 passer rating over the first 9 games of the 2021 season (8 tuddies, 6 ints) and a 107.1 rating w/Reynolds integrated (11 buddies, 2 ints).
All Goff needed was future HOF Josh Reynolds and the Fox.
The oline was also in shambles that year with both Decker and Ragnow injured. The offensive roster was pretty bad for sure.
And Lynn had no idea what he was doing as a play caller. DC as play caller sure helped the passing game, especially once we started featuring a rookie 4th round pick.
Thank goodness that’s all in the past. Holmes has provided us with weapons everywhere on offense.

And that WR corps was all-time awful. Going into the year, Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams were the best presumed starters. That’s a bad starting group to begin with, and then neither of them really played, so it was “next man up” for the scrubs behind them.
Before ARSB came into his own and Reynolds was signed, it was 'Lif and then a bunch of derelicts allegedly running the wrong routes. Is it any surprise Goff struggled a bit?
I can see someone referring to Goff and as poor mans Drew Brees. But a coach can’t say something like that haha…
Drew Brees IMO, is a no doubter top 10 all-time QB. In fact I would probably put him top 5. He has numbers that are unmatchable during his era and he played at a time with the two best QBs who ever lived.
I feel like Goff is for sure underrated

ESPN predictions of NFL player rankings had Goff 77th in the NFL at year’s end and 14th QB.

Matt Stafford is my all-time favorite QB and he will probably never be surpassed. But due to circumstances and Goffs run of just really freaking good QB play, I can see him being the best Lion QB ever. 2-3 more playoff runs and seasons like he’s had in 2022-2025 and he earns that title for me.
Now he will never be as good as Stafford imo, but in a Lions uniform, he absolutely can be.
So, seriously: not tying to kick up a fuss. Just thought the comparison through first 151 - the length of JG’s career to date - would be interesting.
Obv. both Brees and Stafford found their biggest team successes late in their careers. We’ll see what awaits JG in his.
