Naturally, I had to ask Campbell on Wednesday to explain the contribution Thelma and the couple’s other canine kid, a blue-eyed Catahoula Leopard Dog named Bird, had made to the Lions’ success. I was pretty sure it was a lot. Campbell was pretty sure he didn’t want to answer my question.
“You’re talking about my dogs?” he asked in disbelief. “Oh, no. Oh, no.”

It’s hard to blame Campbell. After all, Wednesday is the day the heavy lifting begins in the NFL and a coach like Campbell was in the mind space to talk about preparations for Sunday’s big game against the 5-6 Indianapolis Colts. With all due respect, I’m pretty sure the Lions could beat the Colts if you gave Thelma and Bird headsets and let them call plays.

“Yeah, look, I like my dogs, all right?” he said. “That’s probably the best way to say it: I like my dogs. We’ve had some good ones. These are a couple of characters, and they’re totally different. They go with me on coffee runs – that’s probably the best way to say it.”

We get to see so little authenticity in the lives of athletes and coaches who command so much of our attention. That’s why it was especially captivating to peek inside Campbell’s life away from football with a cup of coffee in his hand and Thelma on his lap. No bling, no flex, just a few pounds of adorable fur that instantly made Campbell the most relatable sports figure in Michigan.

Right now, Campbell is spoken of with the kind of reverent fascination that’s only been bestowed on Michigan’s greatest coaching icons. People like Chuck Daly, Bo Schembechler, Scotty Bowman, Sparky Anderson, Duffy Daugherty, Tom Izzo and Jim Leyland.

Notice there are no Lions coaches on that list. That means if Campbell even just gets to the Super Bowl with the Lions, his spot is guaranteed on the Mount Rushmore of Michigan coaches.

His spot is already guaranteed, as far as I’m concerned. He’s the best Lions coach in my lifetime and it isn’t even close.
