Dan Miller interview with Kelvin Sheppard

They really need to work on promoting their own content. Took some effort to find this, having only seen a small clip of it on Twitter.

Love that he has support of Rodgers, O’Neil and Deshea Townsend.
They’re choosing to partner with Shep.
I’m drinking the Kool-Aid, expecting big things from Shep.

Yea those 3 guys have a ton of experience which should really help Shep as a young 1st time play caller.

The connections these guys have is hard to fathom until they’ve been hired and you’re able to connect the dots. David Corrao and Kacy Rodgers both having Kelvin Sheppard ties via Miami while he was playing.

Was interesting to hear Shep talk about how much Don Capers helped him his 1st year coaching with the Lions. Good to have some experienced coaches around. We had John Fox on staff too after Capers left.

It seems like kind of a dream role for old guys, too… get paid to stay involved with the game and dispense wisdom while letting the young dudes take their turn doing the grind part of actual coaching and prep.

Definitely takes a good old time coach to be willing to pass down knowledge.

Some guys are stuck in their ways and too busy yelling at clouds lol

Yeah, Shep has played with, been coached by, or LSU connections with every coach on his staff except Townsend and O’Neil. Now he has coached a year with them so Shep has a level of trust in the unit.

I think it is especially key that O’Neil returned as Shep mentioned that he had other offers.
It is a testament to the environment built by Dan and Brad that coaches like O’Neil and Townsend are willing to return after being passed over for a coach with less experience.

Shep specifically mentioning Rake in the interview gives me further confidence in my theory that they have bigger plans for him in the defense.

Man, this is the one coaching change this year I’m most excited about. I think Shep is going to be a great DC and I have no doubt that players will love playing for him.

Me I hope it all works out, first time coordinator , thing about these guys it is more then just X’s & O’s your play chess with the other team with play calling. That’s were I worry about the changes.

But I said the same thing with Ben And Glenn first time coordinators and that turn out super. So I’m just waiting to see how it all plays out.

I think this will be smoother than when AG first became a DC.
AG was a first time DC with a new team, new players, a new system to teach the players and the coaches.
AG had to teach scheme, terminology, and the techniques he wanted used on all 3 levels.
He went through a few coaches until he got the group that was all on the same page with his system that he was still developing on the fly.
AG also didn’t have the current level of talent when he started.
Shep steps in to the same team with a highly talented group of vets that he knows well and that all know the system.
More importantly he has a group of experienced coaches that know the system and are able to teach it correctly.
This is assuming that the defense is very similar to what was previously run (as Dan wanted) with only minor tweaks.
Shep is set up to hit the ground running as a new DC.

Once again X’s & O’s is one thing, calling plays during a game is something totally differant. Not everyone can do it or are good at it even if your a great coach

This is the huge difference. AG had no talent in 2021. Or at least very little.

Shep is a first time play caller but he gets a bunch of talented vets in Hutch, Alim, Branch, Kerby, Jack, Anzalone, Reader, etc etc.

Can they stay healthy? Who knows? But Shep has some good ingredients to cook with.

AG’s first year was cooking with Charles Harris, Jerry Jacobs, Will Harris and Tracy Walker! Lol Jamie Collins wasn’t even trying. Alim and Levi tried hard, but they were rookies taking lumps and learning on the fly.
