We have been talking about when we thought the hires would be made and why it was taking so long. I have found speculation by Birkett to be very interesting. Waiting till after the weekend to see how Colbert and Schneider do…here’s hoping.
I’ve heard this too but not 100% sure what he means by let the weekend’s game play at. Is he referencing that is Seattle or Pitt loses, it increases the chances of pursuing one of these guys because they will be out and this available?
Am I remembering incorrectly, or didn’t Colbert already tell them no?
I thought the same thing…but this tweet is from yesterday so I really don’t know. I really don’t think it happens. Here is a steeler post for 6 days ago…but i posted the Birkett bc i was wondering if there was renewed hope?
And yes, i have been getting mocked without mercy from all my family and friends here in pittsburgh that we think we can get THEIR guy.

I suspect that Colbert and Schneider are just using the Lions to get a new contract locked up.
However I find it interesting that Colbert works on one year contracts. A 5 year deal might provide enough security to lure him away. However his contract isn’t up until May so he has no leverage. That’s a smart move by Pit to do one year deals that end in May. Pit completely controls the situation that way.
If Schneider is a home run, Colbert is a grand-slam home run.
I agree with you Air about Schneider. In regards to Colbert, it is by his design. He likes year to year. The steelers would give him the 5 year deal if he wanted it.
I wanted to bring to actual context so it didn’t sound like i am being an ass. It is a well known fact here in Pitt…part of the reason people are laughing at me because they say my logic is flawed in thinking he would come bc of his contract uncertainty. Here is an actual article talking about it.
If Chuck Schmidt would have resigned a year earlier, we could have promoted Colbert, Pro Scouting Director to GM back in 2000.
The Steelers also took Ron Hughes, Vice President of Player Personnel from the Lions in 2001.
I wonder if any contact was made with Ozzie Newsome to gauge any potential interest.
Marvin Lewis basically shared GM duties with Duke Tobin. If we hired him we could theory wait until
May for Colbert or next year for Schneider if we had assurances that they were on board once they were able to be.
I agree though that i doubt either one is much of a possibility.
Well, Schneider is available. Will know soon if he’s interested in Detroit, slim but hopeful.
The question is … can we interview him without permission or not?
If not will Sea give us permission?
Like you said … we will know soon enough.
Apparently he likes year to year because he’s contemplating retirement. So why would he leave PA? He was born and raised there.
The only way I see it happening is if PIT has someone they want to promote or hire and/or Colbert is willing to come to DET for a year or two. Likely on a big money retirement type contract.
Which might make some sense if the Lions want to groom Spielman to be the future GM. Get a veteran GM to fill the role and be the bridge.
The whole thing seems like a long shot to me.
That’s is the only way it happens I think too. But EVERYTHING I am hearing and reading that is local is that Colbert is thinking to retire sooner rather then later and takes time each offseason to evaluate if he is still enjoying the grind or if he wants to stop and enjoy family time more. That doesn’t sound like a man who is worried about seeking a new challenge or has the stomach for the crap that he would go through w the lions. This dude is LOVED in Pittsburgh and has so much grace built up with the fane base and media that he is never questioned really. In Detroit he would be out under the microscope within hours of his initial draft pick. Teams have pursued him before and he has always turned them down. Like @TCLion has said: Rooney’s are all about football. They are all about treating their people the right way and they have a rock solid vision. It’s just different. Been a lions fan my entire life…lived in Pittsburgh most of my adult life…it’s just different. Colbert would need his head examined to come back. As a fan I’d love it and Air is right that only way it happens is if it is an insane money offer that is short term and what not but even there I just don’t see it. This article sums it up perfectly…talks about how Colbert looks like a GM looking to retire…not look for his next challenge in the next year or two…FYI…the conversation centered around the panthers last year when a minority steeler owner (who Colbert obviously knew well) tried to get him in Carolina and he said no.
I doubt he leaves Pittsburgh though. He was born and raised there and is 64-years old. He’s ready to retire imo.
Thing is. He knows what coming to the Lions means and entails and I just don’t see it happening.
It’s a pipe dream in my opinion.
It would take a lot of money, and full control.
I just don’t see it happening.
Schneider is more likely in my opinion.
