I mean that is not a huge difference
And realize Gibbs is better
So again just validating my point

He has become so underrated by the fans. We literally won huge games because Dmont ploughed his way down the field, picking up first downs, and finishing the game for us.
Unfortunately there is a salary cap, and we will probably need that money to fix other areas. I expect we will see a cheap rookie in his role next year…for better or worse.
Just rewatch the 2024 season opener, where Montgomery literally drove the Lions down the entire field in OT. That drive was a masterpiece. He led us to many game leading or game ending drives. His first game as a Lion, he walked the team down the field for the go ahead TD. Montgomery will always be one of my favorite Lions and it’s going to be depressing if he is indeed done here.
RIP Knuckles ![]()
He’s a great player for what he is… Love the guy, but he’s not irreplaceable. Gibbs is special and everyone understands what comes with a player like that, you’ve gotta have him on the field as much as possible. His snap count will be over 70% next season, as it should be
The pure conjecture of this thread is hilarious.
I do think we’ll need a second back, but we can find one even if we don’t spend a lot on it. We found Swaggy for nothing and he only went on to lead the NFL in TDs.
what did Brad say?
If this is real, we may save Monty by getting rid of Tashard Choice. It might be one or the other. I’d choose Monty.
For 2026, unless they could find his replacement for less than $3.5 mil it would be more expensive than keeping him.
Here is my issue
Monty was all about team when he was getting the first series and at or over 50%
As soon as it turns down to 40% or less he is pissed and wants out? No thank you. And maybe that is not what is happening but that is how him complaining feels
I think almost all of the viewpoints in this convo are quite valid, and that we all have basis to feel the way we do.
I’m a huge “culture guy”, and I love Monty (probably more than most). I think his leadership is a big deal, especially when we get the OL fixed.
Brad clearly said he hopes Montgomery is back. He also alluded to the fact that Montgomery may want to increase his workload so maybe they adjust or maybe he decides to go somewhere else.
He has become underrated by our own staff. Joe they used him this year was a disgrace. Gibbs is obviously an unbelievable back but there were games where Monty was the more effective back and the Lions stopped going to him.
People act like Monty is just some power back that vultures TDs from Gibbs but that couldn’t be further from the truth. He is elusive, unreal in pass protection, great hands, good vision, tough as nails and is a great teammate. Thinking he can be replaced with a late round pick is fools gold.

He should be pissed. He’s a hell of a competitor and wants to help the team win. There were times where he was playing unreal and they just stopped going to him.

Unless it’s post June 1st… Then it’s $6 million
I love monty. and we didn’t use him properly this year AT ALL. That’s 100% on dan. so many short yardage situations that were made for him we gave to gibbs. Dumb.
I’d trade him if you’re not going to use him like knuckles. But it’s borderline criminal to let him go.
@valionfan1 I think this is a key statement, given that Monty isn’t even a free agent.
That he makes a statement of “I hope he wants to stay” definitely means we could see him gone.
@DeadStroke or any other knowledgeable person what is our cap hit like if we let him go?
I’d rather the staff utilize him correctly
How many times when he came on the field did you know he was getting the ball because of his infrequent use? People who think he’s easily replaced have no clue.
Monty is not a speed back and the blocking declined as the season progressed. The holes weren’t there thus the declined in touches
What i would do is ask Monty where he would like to be traded to and then work a trade to that team
I wonder if Brad is just creating smoke heading into the draft. Way too open about the need for OL. Way too uncommitted to his 2024 3rd round draft choice. Way too willing to discuss Montgomery as though he wants to be traded.
Either it’s smoke season or he’s lost his grip on good GMing.
And another thing….
I don’t want to hear the GM talking about coaching hires EVER. NEVER!
That’s Dan’s domain and he should talk about it as though it’s 100% up to Dan and he has 100% confidence in Dan’s vision and direction for his staff. Not even for a second should he entertain questions/discussion about the OC search as though he has anything to do with, whether he does or not.
This guy. Man. They’ve got me on the ledge.
