DeChambeau was assessed the penalty, but argued in a very animated manner that he didn’t violate the rule.
Any other golf fans see this today?

My buddies who follow golf and aren’t DeChambeau fans said he got screwed.
I watched the video and that looked like an extremely weak call.
Like watching it?
Or a replay of the situation.

I thought he definitely stepped on grasses that would have affected his swing path. His swing was nearly still hitting them after he knocked them down significantly.
That was interesting.
I believe he was aware of what he was doing. Pretty clever about it.
Hoping he could get away with it, worth a shot.
Better off taking a drop and stroke.

The only problem is that there wasn’t any good place to take a drop. He would have had to drop farther from the hole, which was all taller grass.
His swing on that shot was similar to the way he putts, straight back and through rather than inside to out path. So ultimately where he stepped wasn’t in his swing path. He was right to complain, but he still shouldn’t have stepped where he did. R&A was right and the golfer was right to complain.
Bryson had 20 yards get a proper sight line behind his ball and the pin and he chose to walk on the grass 2 feet behind his ball. The rule is weak. The call is fine. I think Bryson was so locked into getting out of the grass that he lost himself. The idea that the grass he was walking on might be the path his club would take and cause a penalty didn’t even enter his consciousness. I like Bryson but the dude has a history of acting aggrieved.
It was weak! I hope he wins it now. Gonna be epic if so
Its a ticky tack call for sure.
He knew what he was doing but it wasnt anything abnormal.
He would be in 2nd 1 stroke behind the leader.
I firmly believe if he wasn’t a LIV golf member he wouldn’t have gotten penalized
It was the right call, and not particularly close. He knew exactly what he was doing. Bryson has been doing a fantastic job of crushing his own public image this year. Which is crazy because he had done a so much to improve his public image over the past few years.
This is also at The Open. The British are rule sticklers, and look for any chance to apply their rules. Bryson basically went Patrick Reed, tried to push if he would get called on it, got called on it and now wants to cry about it. In a game that you are expected to call fouls on yourself if the ball even moves, you have a guy purposely stomping down on the highest parts of the grass to get it to lay flat. That’s the definition of improving your lie.
Rory holding nothing back on his thoughts regarding that play
I think it is safe to say Rory agreed it was a penalty….

I like Bryson, and I am not a big Rory fan.
He definitely was mashing the grass behind the ball, hence the penalty. In a situation like this especially in a penalty area you need to walk gingerly.

I think some people have overlooked that taking a rehearsal swing while under a tree can lead to the SAME penalty if just 1 leaf is knocked off a nearby branch.
Shooter McGavin — “hits it off” Frankenstein’s “fat foot” during a golf match YouTube. Then Bryson can’t step on the grass.
