Our defense is ranked 5th overall (77.2) by PFF. I’ll say it for some of you: PFF sucks. OK, now that that’s out of the way, let’s dig a little deeper:
Rush defense: 3rd (75.5) - I’ll try to find QB rushing, its killing us again.
Tackling: 1st (75.4) (PS - Did you guys see Mike Evans looking out for Kerby?)
Pass rush: 1st (86.0)…Mrs Hutchinson, you raised a fine lad! I’d like to thank you in-person for that.
Coverage: 19th (62.9)…TA cannot buy a break here. Its almost like they have it out for him.
For me, PFF is not the be-all and end-all, but its a decent measure for players and teams.
For DVOA, which is better except for early in the year, we are 10th on defense, 14th on pass defense and 10th on rush defense.
Seems about right if true. He didn’t seem to have his typical special year that he usually does. Jack Fox was 21st last season in Punt Gross Average at 46.42 yards. So depending upon his average hang time and a couple of other stats give or take 23 seems just about right.
Not sure where he stands after two weeks this season but he’s been hitting some beauties so that’s good to see
Foxy plays for a team whose offense kicks ass, so punts are not from deep in own territory and not happening as often
Foxy is changing games with flipping the field, but when Lucas and Rakestraw slap a punt that is resting inside the 3 into the end zone, it counts as a shitty punt.
R U Sure?
To me, this is where PFF could separate itself from normal stats like gross and net yards. If they have real people watching plays, these punts should be graded high.
I don’t know if they do that. But they could.
also - they don’t take into account how many bad snaps there have been, especially a couple of years ago…Fox has saved a TON of FGs and extra points with his holding abilities…it’s not something ppl think about, but he is truly amazing at it.
Factor in quarterbacking skills, recovering from bad snaps, HANG TIME, etc.
“I mean, I’ve said it all along: How can they grade an offensive lineman when they don’t know what the play is?”
I think there’s a lot of players and coaches that feel the same way,” Kelly said. “You can do whatever you want with it. It’s like me going into a bank and grading a teller because they gave me a lollipop. I gave them a 94.3."
Pretty funny quote from Kelly
fyi - the majority owner of PFF is Chris Collinsworth from NBC
AND they certainly didn’t have problems moving the ball last game; strictly a red zone issue. AND they’ve had that particular issue for… one game. AND they’re coming off two YEARS - 34 games - as a top-5 offense.
I like the odds of them getting it together. A lot.
