Brees just said on SNF halftime that Micah Parson is the favorite to win the award. Not Defensive Rookie of the Year but DPOY!! He is arguably the top defensive player in the entire league- as a ROOKIE!
Perhaps someone can bump the threads from back in March/April that clearly show those of us who were calling for Parsons at 7- I was one. There were others. There were those too who argued against taking an off-the-ball LB. Clearly they were wrong. None of that matters now. Hindsight and all.
Penei Sewell is going to be a nice Tackle for many years- not a bad consolation prize. But Micah Parsons was an Aaron Donald-type game changing defender just sitting there at 7 and the Lions whiffed. Personnel decisions make a MASSIVE difference. Brad Holmes owes us a couple of HR’s to make up for that miss.
I liked parsons as well but sewell being available is hard to pass on guy has shown the potential to be a hof level player at a crucial position. Also, does parsons perform as well here in detroit?
Sewell was a home run. It wasn’t a miss, it was a regime defining choice on how they wanted to build their team. Cornerstone elite tackle………parsons is nasty…but we didn’t miss….
This isn’t nessarlly ture, one might say that not taking the best player in the draft at a position of need is indeed a miss. Just because you still ended up with a good player. Doesn’t mean you didn’t miss on the best player.
I don’t think he is a sure fire better player Than sewell at his position though especially if you flipped situations. Only thing that will prove out is their careers but if sewell ends up in the HOF and Parsons does as well I don’t see it as a miss
They may have, Smith is getting older and they were relying on an undrafted rookie from 2020 on the right side. They could have seen the pure talent of sewell and felt he would complete their line and help when they need to replace smith. But I guess we won’t know
This is less about Sewell and more about passing on Parsons.
Sewell by all accounts has had a fantastic rookie year as the youngest ever opening day starter at LT. His move back to RT has been really good. He was not a miss in anything like that same way Ebron was a miss over Donald, OBJ, et al.
That said, if DC and Brad could go back to draft night, would they take Parsons over Sewell now that they’ve seen their team’s weaknesses, and both players’ impact in the NFL?
We won’t ever get an answer on that hypothetical but if I were to play I would say no. I believe that getting a HOF level tackle would take precedent for me over a HOF level edge rusher. Just my opinion but I feel that a guy that can keep your qb clean and open up the entire playbook is extremely valuable. It’s close and I wanted parsons until sewell was available but I don’t think they would make that trade.
I definitely wanted Parsons over Sewell. But I’m not in the slightest bit mad. According to internet’s and people’s, Sewell has been Hook worthy of hype. I’m good with it.
Anyone who watched Parsons last game in college when he was MVP of that bowl win and didn’t think he was the best defensive player in the draft was insane
There were many who were hung up on the character issues. One of the podcast guys from Pride of Detroit was adamantly anti-Parsons. Like he was the anti-christ or something
One poster here did a very thorough job of debunking most the character stuff but it seemed to stick anyway for the most part
