DetNews: Aidan Hutchinson 'jelling early' with new Lions edge defenders

A puff piece but some truth to the point of more depth, all depth isn’t equal as we well know, may allow hutch a few plays off.

In an ideal world, the Lions’ new additions will be able to capitalize on the attention Hutchinson receives and also draw defenses to them, creating opportunities for Hutchinson. But an underrated aspect of the Lions’ rebuilt edge group — again, in an ideal world — is the possibility Hutchinson will be able to take some plays off earlier in the game and save his best for last, when the team needs a big stop in the fourth quarter.

In his first year back from a broken leg, Hutchinson played the most regular-season snaps (1,005, per Pro Football Focus) by an edge defender last season — and it wasn’t even really close.

Las Vegas Raiders edge Maxx Crosby (935) was second, and Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, was third (869). In the same number of games, Garrett played just 86.4% of the snaps that Hutchinson did.

Hutchinson, the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, led the league in pressures, per Next Gen Stats (NGS) and finished fourth in sacks (14 1/2).

“It’s a fine line,” Hutchinson said when asked if he’d like to get more breaks throughout a game. “Overtime, I’m not coming out. Fourth quarter, I’m not really coming out. So … toward the end of the season last year, we started being more deliberate about, ‘Hey, I’m gonna take these first two plays off of this drive.’ I did feel it in the fourth quarter. It really helps.”

The numbers back that up: According to Next Gen Stats, Hutchinson led the league in fourth-quarter pressure rate at a whopping 28.2%. In fact, 40 of the 89 pressures that NGS marked for Hutchinson in 2025 took place in the fourth quarter.

The Detroit Lions added Moore from Michigan with a second-round pick in April and signed veterans DJ Wonnum and Payton Turner in free agency while parting ways with Marcus Davenport and Josh Paschal, hoping to fix what was a roster deficiency for multiple seasons. After an offseason of reshaping the defensive end room in Detroit, all signs point to the new corps “jelling early,” Hutchinson, 25, said.

“I feel like Derrick, DJ, Payton, all those guys, we’ve been jelling early, which is good to see,” Hutchinson said after an OTA practice in Allen Park. "Derrick’s like a quieter rookie, which I appreciate. It’s nice to have someone who, you know he’s about the work, you know what he’s gonna come out and do every day. So I really appreciate the way that he’s worked.

“DJ, obviously, a vet, he’s been great. We’ve been trying to build the connection. As edge rushers, you gotta feel each other out a little bit and see what the vibe is, and it’s been great.”

It’s early June, but this DL does have some serious potential. Of course, I am quite used to watching opposing QBs having enough time to paint their nails back there. There is hope with the group we have. They’re healthy and there is some nice depth.

I agree. This is a nice puff piece but to me it all comes down to which Alim we get. If we get the disruptive one, I think our potential is top 5. If he plays to par with last season, our push from the middle will hurt.

Tyleik making a big 2nd season jump would sure help

Also looking forward to seeing what the Assassin can bring. Would be wild if he became something.

Agreed, can he become a player with serious snaps or just another missed gamble. Really looking forwad to see what he can do.

# Why Lions are confident Alim McNeill will have ‘bounce-back year’

… now that he’s another offseason removed from the knee injury that ended his 2024 season prematurely, the Detroit Lions defensive tackle is confident he’ll be back to his playmaking ways this fall.

“It’s night and day difference between last year and now,” McNeill said after the Lions’ third OTA practice of spring last week.

McNeill said he was 100% healthy last season; he played the highest percentage of available defensive snaps (77%) of his career, according to Pro Football Reference. But he never felt quite right on the field.

“It’s just how the body works,” McNeill said. “It takes time for stuff to come back a little bit and some stuff just was not there. No matter how hard I tried to do certain stuff, it just wasn’t there yet. And it’s here now, so I’m not really thinking about last year at all, honestly.”

…McNeill said he didn’t feel as explosive after his return as he did before his injury, though some of the NFL’s player-tracking stats tell a different story. Last year, McNeill posted the best get-off time (.95 seconds) and time-to-pressure marks (2.6 seconds) of his career.

“Just overall strength and being able to connect the mind and the body,” he said. “Just my brain being able to know that this leg is good and I can step and plant here, stuff like that. So it was more mental, and like now, it’s cool, just getting that muscle to fire with this than anything. I never felt last year that I was limited at all as far as mentally. But yeah, just now I have that connection. It’s just easier now.”

McNeill said his knee feels “amazing” 18 months after surgery, and his focus this offseason has been “just to be that dynamic, explosive player that I know I can be.”

He acknowledged his success as a pass rusher will determine much of how the Lions do defensively this fall.

“If you don’t have an inside rush, it doesn’t really matter what you do,” he said.

And the way the Lions built their roster this offseason, it’s clear they believe McNeill can find his pre-injury form again.
