The Detroit Lions had 59 players in uniform for their preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

So many performances to evaluate, so many plays to remember, so many themes to cover, and after delivering a few platitudes about how he was proud of the way practice translated to the field, this is how coach Dan Campbell opened his postgame press conference: “Just off the top of my head, one of my favorites was watching (Skyler Gill-Howard) run down the quarterback, force a critical fourth down, give the offense the ball back. It’s the little stuff like that; that takes a tremendous amount of effort. … That was awesome.”

In 38 snaps against Cincinnati, and particularly on that one, Gill-Howard (6 feet, 280 pounds) started to show something about his play that those who have watched and coached him already knew.

“You’re not going to outwork him,” said Jordan Gigli, who oversaw Gill-Howard’s transition from linebacker to defensive line at Northern Illinois.

The play where he chased down Johnson revealed a lot about his football character and a little bit about his athleticism, but it probably wasn’t his most physically impressive rep of the night.

On his final play of the first half, Gill-Howard used a lightning-fast inside move to blow past Bengals guard Jalen Rivers like a house on the side of the road, forcing Johnson into an intentional grounding on fourth down. The loss of 13 and turnover on downs gave the Lions a chance to add another field goal as time expired, another scoreboard-altering play

The motor he’s put on display, combined with the raw talent he possesses, makes it feel as though it’s a matter of when, not if, he’ll be able to contribute to this team in the regular season, which isn’t always the case for a sixth-round pick, and especially not an undersized one.

“I like the fact that he’s got a little chip on his shoulder. He’s got something to prove,” Campbell said. “And I think he feels like he belongs, which he should.”

Gigli said Gill-Howard “plays harder than anyone I’ve ever coached in my 24 years of coaching college football.”

“His motor, his relentlessness, it’s unmatched. I haven’t seen it. I haven’t seen it,” Gigli added.

These words mean the world to Gill-Howard. When he arrived at NIU, he was like a fish out of water. Gigli’s belief got him through it.

“Him trying to teach me D-line, it was a struggle at first,” Gill-Howard said. “… I went through some tough times, but I mean, that’s amazing to hear. It’s such an honor, especially from him, because he’s the one that shaped me into the player that I am today. Without him, I probably wouldn’t be standing…on this field with the Detroit Lions.”

Naturally, his journey at Texas Tech wasn’t all roses, either. An ankle injury limited him to just six games, and he finished with just 13 tackles, 2½ for loss, and a half-sack. At his pro day, his athletic testing produced a mediocre 5.61 Relative Athletic Score. The fact that he was even drafted at all, No. 205 overall, is almost another amazing feat in its own right.

And to play for Campbell of all people? What a match made in heaven.

“Obviously, they traded for the pick to grab me. They had a lot of confidence in me,” Gill-Howard said. "My main thing is proving it to them that I can go out there and do what they need me to do and more. … Coach Campbell is a guy you want to play for, a guy you want to go to war with.

“I’d die for this team.”

Good watch on SGH. He has that penetrating DT ability, especially to rush on passing downs. Probably not quite big enough or strong enough to be much against the run on the inside, but could easily be a guy who can help stunt and hold a big edge. Also would be highly effective chasing down running QB’s.

I think this guy’s got the inside track to make the team in place of Wingo

Totally agree. I think this guy can do everything we hoped Wingo could, but he has better size and stays on the field. I think SGH knocks Wingo off the roster. He could find himself as Alim’s backup, and Chris Smith as Williams backup.

He’s the same height weight as Wingo… And even though he’s a rookie, he’s slightly older than him too. I still think they try to keep Wingo on the PS. I agree about Chris Smith, they really like him, he’s not a numbers guy, just does his job

Good call out, I did not realize they were the same size. I actually thought SGH was a little taller and heavier.

It might be a physical strength thing. Wingo seems to get caught up in the wash a lot. SGH seems to be better at dodging the pile, or slipping through the wash instead of getting caught up with it.

Wingo is a weird study for me… I thought he really played well as a rookie, but then was only active for 2 games last year while being healthy all season. Gotta trust the staff on that one

This is strictly my own opinion, Wingo seems to be another guy who is constantly nicked up. I think the coaches have some questions about his toughness. In the games I watched, if he can dart and get through the line, he is effective and can make plays. However, if at any point an OL gets hands on him, he is immediately controlled and washed out. I think there may be some effort issues, or at least a guy who does not know how to fight through contact.

The story of Wingo returning from an injury that kept most people out months to captain LSU one more time in their meaningless bowl game is one of the reasons I knew we would love him. He was also voted their captain and rewarded that jersey (#18 I think? Something like that) a year after getting there.

Sometimes guys DO suffer from injuries that allow them to keep playing but really affect their performance. High ankle sprains are like that, LaPorta’s gone through it, on and on. Wingo showed as a rookie he could play in the league, he just needs to get healthy imo. Now it’s possible he never really does - that it’s a degenerative thing - and it’s also possible SGH is simply better than Wingo even if he’s full strength. But I don’t think the guy lacks for toughness. Not like Rakestraw.

SGH out there in the field doing the pregame speech to the defense… Dude is making the team

I think he has some really utility even if it’s niche. Nobody in that DT room has juice like he does in true pass rushing situations. Though he does have to compete with the edges sliding inside for those snaps.

IMO are best pass rush front in obvious passing situations is probably rushing five with Moore or Aiden as the chess piece, the other and AH at EDGE and SGH and Alim as DTs.

After seeing him in the games and hearing camp reports, hes in. Lions are gonna likely keep 8 DL. 7 are virtually locked. Whose last?

LDE: Hutchinson, Hassanein,

RDE: Moore, Wonnum, Lacy

3T: McNeil, SGH

NT: Williams, Levi

It really boils down to who can show the most

NT C. Smith. 3Tk: Wingo, West. Edge: Turner, Lucas

I think Smith is in for sure, I’d swap him and Levi on your list. Levi may be the last guy in, if he can stay upright for the next few weeks. The rest, any of them they want to keep can easily be moved to PS, provided they clear waivers of course.

Chris Smith has cleared waivers like 5 times the last 2 years . I dont see that changing. Levi however. I doubt he would.

Looked good again today!

I see no way that he doesn’t make this team!

Yea he has flashed enough that he ain’t making it to the practice squad if cut. He would get claimed for sure.

Hopefully they can carve out a pass rushing role for him. He’s got some serious juice inside.
