Schlereth was talking about how critical time of possession was so I thought I’d look it up. Fascinating.
Note to opponents. You’ll need to perform several exorcisms to contain all this possession.
Just imagine if AGs defense could stop anyone the TOP would be way better.
Glad you said it before I did
Like with all NFL stats, the difference doesn’t seem all that great, but it’s a game of inches… and seconds.
A six-minute swing in a game is really a big deal. Those are the minutes where games can be won or lost.
Or would it?
Detroit’s defensive yards per play is 2nd worst in the league the last 3 weeks at 6.4 yards per play.
If his defense was even a little better, it would take the opponent more plays to get downfield.
Haha maybe that’s the strategy let em score quick so the Lions offense can stay in rythem.
Those top 10 teams are nice company to be in. Cleveland just needs to get it together. I haven’t watched them at all but I thought Schwartz is doing a good job with their D isn’t he?
Absolutely, he’s a fantastic D coordinator, should get another HC gig if he wants it.
How about offering the other side 3 pts for every offensive possession and devoting all actual gameplay to Lions’ O vs. other team’s D?
3, 4 and 5:
Philly, Dallas and SF.
Gonna have to beat two of the 3 likely!
He’s the definition of a guy who loves just being a coordinator and doesn’t want to be a HC. He has had opportunities. This is why I think Ben Johnson stays around, he doesn’t want the HC responsibilities and just wants to kill being an OC, just like Jim Schwartz is killing being a DC
I hope so, but he’s young and probably ambitious as a result. I think Schwartz was the same way, he learned after taking the HC job that he was better suited to be a DC. Maybe he’d be more prepared for the big job now that he’s 15 years older. Idk… Losing BJ is about the worst thing that could happen to this team as far as long term success IMO.
Right on, we will see!
Wow. BenJ is awesome - as an OC, as a leader, as a personality, but… the worst thing? I’ll forever be impressed especially by his partnering w/Jared to design the offense. Hard to overstate the importance of that to the team’s success. I doubt there’re a lot of NFL OCs, especially first-timers looking to prove themselves, who would have done that, especially with a QB at the low point of his career.
But now that the Lions will have had the benefit of working so closely with Ben over two years to put the offense together, I can think of several others whose loss I’d expect to affect long-term success more, in some cases dramatically much more.
Brad Holmes (1a).
Dan Campbell (1b).
Jared Goff.
Penei Sewell.
ARSB.
Those five for sure.
Probably Hutch.
Possibly Anzalone.
And I think Gibbs absolutely could well become that kind of difference-maker. Jamo has that kind of potential. Alim.
But those first five… heck ya.
We have been able to put together a lot of sustained drives. Especially in the 4th quarter. Best kind of football. Long scoring drives to wear down the opponent and keep their offense (and our defense) off the field.
Well I was operating under the assumption that his superiors would remain intact, so Holmes and Campbell are off the table for me. But yes, other than MAYBE Goff (we do have Hooker behind him who COULD be as good), I believe BJ is more important than any player on the roster. They’ve won games without Gibbs, Ra, etc… Without Johnson that doesn’t happen.
I could see him staying in Detroit until he has a SB appearance on his resume. After that it will be hard to turn down the big bucks of multiple teams bidding for his services.
So does anybody have any idea what Ben might be making salary wise? How much do OC’s make?
