According to an interview with Lions team historian Bill Keenist in Wayne State University media, former owner William Clay Ford pushed for the song to have a revival following the 45-0 opening night loss to Washington in 1991, where their fans serenaded him directly with their own famous fight song. According to Keenist, Ford pushed for the fight song to be more prominent at home games, including putting the lyrics on the scoreboard, to increase fans’ recognition of the song.
