This was the fifth game in Jared Goff’s career in which his team scored 50+ points The only other starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era with that many 50+ point games: Tom Brady (8), Drew Brees (6), and Peyton Manning (5)
This reminds me of Chris Collinsworth and Stafford. After Stafford was traded to the Rams the first Sunday night game they played and Collinsworth acted like he had never paid attention to or even saw Stafford prior.
Paraphrase:
“I never realized how talented this guy is, one of the best arms in the league”.
The Stafford love by all the pundits once he was traded to the Rams was nauseating. Absolutely nauseating. Since then, Matt is 1 and 2 against the Lions, including his first year win when we didn’t have a team, and then got his ass paddled in a playoff game. Personally, I loved Matt when he was here. He’s a very good quarterback. But I think Goff is actually better.
That game was pretty close. In the 3rd quarter, the 0-6 Lions were up on the 5-1 Rams by 19-17 before the defense gave up a 59 yarder to Kupp, which led to a TD and put the Rams up 25-19 in the 4th Qtr. At the 5:41 mark, Lions had 1st and 10 at the Rams 12 yard line before Goff threw a pass intended for Hockenson, which was picked off by Jalen Ramsey.
Not a bad effort from a team that was bereft of talent. ARSB didn’t play and it was really before his great run started on 12-5-21 against the Vikings.
It’s one thing for fans to overemphasize stuff like arm strength, “off-platform” throws and all that. I find it amazing how many pundits under-value the importance of the between-the-ears stuff, which is where Jared REALLY sets himself apart from almost everyone. When the O is humming along, guys are running wide open and it looks like pitch’n’catch, leading some to conclude that any decent QB could thrive in this system.
Truth is that JG’s abilities to read the defensive look at the line, make the right protection and play calls, and adjust to last-second defensive countermoves post-snap, and run thru his progressions in an instant are a HUGE part of what makes it look easy.
What did Dan emphasize in praising JG’s performance? That he can “handle a ton of information.”
I think this is a great post and agree with pretty much everything. I think in todays “clicks mean cash” sports media, the crazy physical plays get all of the attention because “ohhh, there’s only a handful of guys who can do that!” Think of how many times that phrase is said, and they use it for guys who also sucked for most of the game.
One thing we’ve heard in sports over many years, do you want to spot the guy who is truly great? Look for the guy who makes everything look easy. For the Red Wings fans, think of Nick Lidstrom. Widely regarded as one of the best defenseman ever, and the biggest compliment you can give the guy is “He made everything look easy.” At his peak, even 2 on 1 chances, he would shut them down himself.
If we took today’s sports media back to the 80’s, I will bet you that Joe Montana would be dismissed as a system QB, while a John Elway or Dan Marino would get all the air time because they are physical talents. It’s kind of a shame too, because the Lions had who I guarantee would be the biggest click magnet in history in Barry Sanders. If Barry were playing today, he would own sports media with his running ability.
As far as the Stafford love now versus when he was in Detroit, I still thik it goes back to the Lions will never get national respect until they win a Super Bowl. The media is still treating them like they are a “cute story”, yeah they had a couple decent years, but they’ve already dug the grave and are just waiting to dump the body back in. ■■■■ Florio, the guy is a full Vikings fanboy and it kills him that the best QB his team has had in 20 years is a washed up Brett Favre, and the amazingly average Kirk Cousins.
The media expects the Lions to suck, because that’s been their history, and they have their big market teams they want to kiss ass to. It took them one game to pronounce that the Packers are a dynasty, and that the Lions are finally dead again because they lost their offensive coordinator, who was responsible for ALL of their success. There’s no chance that the guy who picked Ben Johnson may know how to find new coordinators, no no, he just got lucky once and that’s over. Now it’s all about the Packers with Lafleur and Love, the Bears with Ben and Williams and the Vikings with KOC and JJ McCarthy. They will all be feasting on the Meathead and the Civilian.
Totally agree with all of this. And there’s only one way to flip the media narrative on its head, the same way that Brady did. Win the whole damn thing.
