He defined MLB. Using him as a model is why I wanted Campbell. Scare the shit out of those crossing WR.

Wow, I was just thinking about Butkus a few minutes ago. I had watched a documentary about him a few days ago and was remembering that not two minutes before I saw this here, eerie

Sad news indeed. He was a heckuva player and tough as nails.

The Bears have had some tough, blue collar players over the years. RIP Mr Butkus.

A legend both as a football player and as a provider of sophomoric joke material

He used to call Mike Lucci, Michelle Lucy.

Sad day.
Condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

If he in fact did, he would be the only one. Were you around when Lucci played?

RIP sir -you were a heck of a likable guy and a nice player- sad news for football fans and I’m sure we all express sadness for your family with your passing as well .

Great Player RIP.

Probably means the Bears win tonight.

Not only a HOF player but one of the great personalities in the history of the game.
I mean, if Bradley Nowell is putting your name in his songs, you’ve probably transcended football.

Yes, and they taunted the shit out each other. Excerpt from a book, and while it doesn’t say Butkus said this in this quote, he did. I’ll have to do a deeper dive.

"From the opening play, the fans show they are in a wild mood. They have begun to call Mike Lucci (pronounced Loo-chee) Lucy. And when Lucci is on the field, they taunt him mercilessly. “Hey, Lucy! You’re not big enough to carry Butkus’ shoes.”

The Lions are stopped on their first offensive series, and punt. As the ball sails downfield, Butkus and Ed Flanagan, the Detroit center, trade punches at midfield. They are both completely out of the play."

So it was the endearing sportsmen of Chicago in the stands that started this? Oh, what a surprise. I saw Butkus play in person several times and always considered him the best, in spite of Joe Schmidt. Got to know Looch several years ago, and even at his age & battling cancer, doubt any of those Bear loyalists would ■■■■ with him. I remember Butkus waving frantically to Detroit bench when Chuck Hughes hit the turf.
