Did Dan learn about points and field position?

He coached a smart game yesterday not going for 4th downs, getting points when he could, and playing with some awareness of how important field position can be.

Did he finally learn or was this just a fluke?

Not sure it was not just for that game but I do think it was by far his best called game.

Thought he called an amazing game.

And people thinking Morton is fired and Dan hires a new OC in the offseason. Not so sure.

Goff has looked awesome with Dan calling plays

I don’t recall a 4th down that would have made him even think about it. Time will tell.

almost everything he has done this year, would have worked with last year’s OL. I think he finally took it as proof that he can’t count on this year’s squad to perform the way last year’s did. NOT a philosophical error…his mistake is trusting GG and a pair of rooks as much as he did Z, Ragz, ā€˜n’the boys

I don’t recall any 4th and less than 5 to go. There might have been some, but I sure don’t recall any. I think he would still have gone for it in the Cowpoke game if the 4th down situation had been more manageable. If there were any 4th down situations that were less than 5 yards to go then I would be willing to bet we were deep in our own end of the field. I just think the way the game played out is why we didn’t see any gambles

He wanted to, but there were no situations that were just inside being outrageous. That’s why his nose kept morphing into different shades of red.

On a serious note, I hope this plays out well, Dan becomes a great play caller, and then we only have to worry about losing our defensive coordinator every year.

Well, considering football has been his life for 30+ years, I really don’t think it’s something he’s just learning.

He’s an aggressive Coach and Playcaller.

Everyone loves it, when we win.

Everyone likes to be smarter than the 30 year Pro, when we don’t.

I don’t think it has anything to do with wanting or trying to be smarter thans Dan. You say Dan has 30 years of experience but there’s 50 years of stats and coaching decisions that tell you what is smart to do in situations, much like gambling at a blackjack table. You can ā€œhitā€ or ā€œstayā€ in any situation but there’s a lot of history that tells us what the odds are on how to play the odds to give us the best chance to win. Hitting on 20 isn’t smart in most situations just like going for it on 4th down in your own territory is not a smart thing to do unless you’re near the end of the game and desperate.

Dan makes dumb decisions sometimes and they’re called ā€œgutsyā€ if they work but it sometimes will backfire and make the situation worse or lessen his chances of winning.

Some people say that the players love this about him but it’s much like us at work having to support something that our boss asked us to do. We know it’s dumb or not going to work the way they think it is but we carry it out regardless and lt the results teach them.

I love Dan, I think he’s a great motivator and he builds a great culture but he’s shown to take chances or risks when maybe he shouldn’t have and it’s not hindsight talking, it’s 50 years of football strategy talking.

I hope Dan adapts to in-game situations a little better.

That said, I believe the Lions have put up over 40 twice since he’s been calling plays.

Lots of points!
