you got me curious.
hard to believe that it was only 18 years ago (2007) for the first iPhone.
Disc golf actually got going in 1976, thirty years before that.
I vivdly remember my son showing me what he was doing on an iPhone, in about 2008 or 9, camera- gps, etc. I thought he was a genius. I was still on Nokia’s and Qualcomm’s.
I absolutely LOVE disc golf. My friends aren’t much of golfers, but we can all get out and disc golf. Here are the reasons I love it:
It’s free
You can play in 1-2 hours (depending on the course)
You can usually have a beer before/during/after the round
Good exercise
Competitive
Strategic
Social
Therapeutic
It is seriously the best thing if you can start playing and find some friends to play with that you can compete against. When I am stressed at work or with family stuff, chucking a hunk of plastic through the woods can really do the trick to help me feel better. If you have never tried it, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Download the Udisc app and find a course near you. Go to a play it again sports and buy some cheap used discs, or (my preferred method) go to a course that has some ponds in play and go fishing for lost discs in those ponds.
I play real golf but never seriously. I play to hang out with friends, drink beer, and trash talk. I enjoy it. I’ve played in a couple of hoity-toity charity events through work. The last time my caddy was caddying for me after caddying for Peyton Manning, or so he said. I consoled him on the downgrade. He was a funny guy though. Good sport about shagging my shanks.
I don’t mind actual golf. But the dress code and prices to golf are outrageous. I can play disk golf naked rocking a mullet! Plus I hit the Wendy’s drive thru on the way home for the Joe Cullen special!
Any tips for a backhand that slices a ton on drives? My distance aint bad. But slices like crazy to the left especially on long throws. I’m sure it’s technique related. Shorter throws got a lot more control and accuracy.
Really enjoying it though… Even got a couple birdies yesterday. And of course multiple bogeys.
That is either an angle issue or your disc is too overstable.
Angle - you need to throw the disc flat. That takes time and technique. Start throwing with less power and really focus on flat because the disc is a wing and if you tilt the wing it goes that way.
Disc selection. Discs can be very overstable - they go left hard on a right handed backhand. Or discs can be understable which means you can actually get a right hand backward to turn right throughout the flight. That is called turn or flip.
So you need a disc that has a negative number for turn.
Some discs will be -1, -2 -3 or even -4 for turn. The more negative, the less it wants to go left on a right hand backward and the more it will “flip over” and go right instead. Downside is they are finnicky in the wind and will flip all the way over and become a roller.
So get a disc that is very understable and that will keep it flying in the air much longer. As you gain power and technique those discs will become too understable for you and then you go try discs with less turn. But at the beginning, you want easy to throw discs.
Thx a lot brother. I appreciate the feedback. I think I just throw too hard. Cause with less speed my accuracy is much better. But those long par 3’s and 4’s are my nemimsus
I only have 2 discs though… Perhaps I need to upgrade? Both weigh 173 grams. I have even played with Ultimate frisbees but that was so difficult in the wind. Still fun though.
I’m not looking to buy a bunch of discs…but if you bought 3 or 4 what would they be and why? I don’t really understand your -1 and - 2 points. Probably why I still suck. Lol
