The Detroit Lions offensive line coach twice interviewed this offseason as a candidate to be Seattle’s offensive coordinator, a role with increased prestige and perhaps a bump in pay. Fraley, however, decided to return to Detroit, his home since 2018.

“It was a good experience,” Fraley, 47, said Tuesday of the interview process. “I went out there — it was a long flight — but it was very good. I think (with) everything you do in life, you’re always learning from something and trying to get better at it. It was a great opportunity to at least look at and learn from. You never want to take things for granted. … We had a great meeting, but I’m very glad I’m back here because this is where I wanted to be with my family. … It was a great little learning experience. If it ever arose or came about again, (now) I’ve already taken that step. What can I do better? What can I not do better?”

Frank Ragnow, Detroit’s starting center for the last eight seasons, has grown tremendously under Fraley, too. Ragnow in January said he would do anything he could to keep Fraley with the Lions.

Fraley mentioned head coach Dan Campbell and a “special room” of offensive linemen as reasons for his return.

“There’s a lot outside of football, too,” he said. “Everybody knows I’ve got four kids, a third one about to go to college this year, so that’s three college bills. … (My) family, we’ve been here going on eight years. … My kids, before here, the longest they ever lived (in one place) was four years. Michigan, I would say, is home for them.”

As for his new title — in addition being the team’s offensive line coach, Fraley is now also recognized as Detroit’s run-game coordinator — that just sounds nice.

“It looks good on paper,” Fraley joked.

Fraley happy with ‘fresh, new faces’

Detroit’s draft haul didn’t contribute to Fraley sticking around — he made his decision before Tate Ratledge and Miles Frazier were selected in the second and fifth rounds, respectively — but he was happy to see general manager Brad Holmes give him a couple of extra pieces to use.

I’m glad he has his family priorities right. And that just happens to align with my priorities of a Super Bowl dynasty in Detroit. :boom: :boom: :boom:
