Do we make Goff the highest paid QB in the league?

Great point. Several of us were saying they should have extended him after last season for 45 a year. Now after another amazing season he’s looking at 50 plus

He makes another deep playoff run next year and it’s 55-60

Also Goff doesn’t get hurt. I think him and Allen have been available for the most starts since 2018

Yes, but if we wait 2 years the price will be well over 60mil per year to keep him. Do you want to pay 20-25% more by waiting to see if your lottery ticket pays off? Chances are it wont… that my friend is the benefits/risk of paying early vs wait and see.

If we extend Sewell this off season maybe we get it done for 25-28mil per. If we wait 2 years it will be 35mil per on the same length extention. You risk in case of injury but save a lot if all goes to plan.

Don’t take this the wrong way, I am for resigning Goff, but in fairness to Matt, he never had the run game, O-coordinator and O-line Goff has.
Goff is the perfect QB to run Dan/Bens offense. He is a great play action QB, can make quick reads and throws with precision on timing routes. Who else has these quality traits?

Matt needs everything to be perfect

Chances are an extension doesn’t pay off as well. History has shown that massive QB contracts rarely work out.

Not saying Goff shouldn’t be extended. But the bust rate of bloated QB contracts is very high too. There’s big risk no matter what route you take. It’s not a no brainer like so many supporters make it out to be. Goffs limitations, whether you want to ignore them or not, are pretty major in today’s NFL.

I’ve heard that same train of thought with Goff.
All QB’s need an O-line and running game unless your name is Maholmes.

Pretty safe to say Goff isn’t a bust. Three Pro Bowls. Just turned down another and four top five offenses with two teams in eight years. That’s kind of insane actually

You’re welcome.

A bust in terms of guys getting paid huge money and it not translating into anything.

I know people will want to hit me for saying this but we may never get back to the NFC title game. Everyone acts like it’s just a forgone conclusion because of everything that’s transpired. Even the annual best teams in football struggle to get back to where we were just at. And most of the teams that do have a Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady as their QB.

I have full confidence that we can get to a SB, but things still have to go right for it to happen. And a QB making top dollar does make it tougher…I know the from the beginning Goff supporters have a hard time admitting that to be true.

As for a direct response to your post…here comes the “hater” Goff has been extremely lucky in the two main situations he’s been apart off. Two teams with the right culture and or loaded with talent. Also two very talented coaches, some of the best in the league. A QB who’s been gifted with two great situations. That doesn’t mean Goff isn’t good because he is…but it does have something to do with his success.

I don’t completely disagree, but I think if you look closer every really great quarterback, got lucky in in their situation with a solid cast of elite talent around them and great coaching staff

I would say it’s exceedingly rare for a quarterback to be exceptional with no talent around him, but it’s not that rare for a quarterback to suck with exceptional talent around him. I don’t see our talent level dropping anytime soon with Holmes and I love the way Goff runs this offense - he’s like a coach on the field. Decker himself said it allows the line to play so much faster and better because of how quickly Goff will recognize defenses, change plays and call the Alerts

As far as a correlation to quarterbacks, making big money and teams being successful. I think it’s a little more difficult to say there’s a direct causation with teams, not being successful who are paying a lot to the quarterback position

Furthermore, and I know I just keep repeating myself, but we’re in a championship contender window right now, and for the next 3 to 5 years. A backloaded contract will give us more flexibility to keep this team and its talent together, not less flexibility. If we extend Goff this offseason he will probably count less against the cap the next few years than he did last year

(also, that entire post was all voice to text while driving so I can’t proofread it for a little bit and please excuse me if there’s unintentional ridiculous and or hilarious typos)
