Dorky. But fun. ESPN Coaching Matchmaker

Looks like Saleh and Marvin Lewis are the highest graded for Detroit.

Fun but The grades seem to be more of best fit for the coach, not for the team.

Interesting description they gave about each of the coaches also. Greg Roman seems like he’d be a good fit with potentially Justin Fields.

So no one gets an A grade match for the lions ?

I would rather have the GM candidate then HC

The roster requires so much turnover. it is difficult to say who would be a great fit.

I was really surprised that Marvin Lewis was considered a B+ candidate for the Lions. Marvin just doesn’t excite me. He’s not horrible, but I just can’t behind him for the Lions job.

Why?

His record with the Bengals wasn’t very good. Yes he transformed them from a loser into a team that gets to playoffs sometimes. But he never won a playoff game in all his time in Cincy. He does check some boxes that’s for sure. But I don’t he can get the Lions very far.

He had Andy friggen Dalton and Carson Palmer while playing the Super Bowl contending Ravens and Steelers twice a year… He did an admirable job in Cincinnati

Huh? His record at the Bengals was very good. Context is important.

He had a .518 winning percentage. He rebuilt them
into a playoff team thrice. He led them to a 12-4 Division championship with the Red freaking Rifle as his QB. He lasted 256 games for that sorry franchise.

In the 189 games preceding his arrival in Cincinnati the preceding head coaches combined for a .290 winning percentage.

Given the situation Marvin Lewis’ track record in Cincinnati was outstanding.

Marvin Lewis had four straight double digit win seasons with the frickin Bengals.

His postseason record was 0-7. He was in Cincy 15 years & made the playoffs 7 times that’s not exactly Belichick or Lombardi type numbers. Yes, he did transform the Bengals a little bit, made them a little respectable. But he was 0-7 in the playoffs. He was there 15 years with a winning percentage barely over .500 and he was 0-7 in the playoffs and he doesn’t seem to have gotten a whole of HC interviews since getting fired in Cincy. I’ll kindly pass.

What I like most about the resume is that he built them from scratch and then caught some bad luck with the Palmer injury and then rebuilt them again. Then Carson wanted out and he rebuilt them a third time with even better results despite a massive downgrade at QB. It wasn’t just luck. He knows what he’s doing.

Here’s some ESPN fun… Their NFC North projection before the season started…

His worse transgression during his time there was having an undisciplined team… Lots of off the field issues and personal fouls

In those last four trips Andy Dalton’s QB rating was 57.8. That’s hard to overcome.

Also, the Bengals had made all of 7 trips to the playoffs in their preceding 35 years as an NFL franchise. Lewis took them to the playoffs 7 times in 11 years.

5 of those with Andy Dalton & Jon Kitna as his QB in a division with the Steelers and Ravens in his division.

Hey thanks. I totally forgot about the off field arrests with the Bengals during Marvin’s tenure. At one point I remember the Bengals were averaging one arrest per month. I don’t blame that all on Marvin, those players are definitely responsible for their decisions to violate the law. But it does reflect badly on Marvin & organization when stuff like that happens.

I don’t care all that much. I’ll take passion over discipline. I’d prefer both but I’m over having neither one.

Don’t say that too loudly around these parts… A lot of people only want choir boys on their team… Winning be damned
