I think the “redshirting” comment could be taken 2 ways.
It could nean they don’t plan to have him on the 53-man roster and keep him on the NFI list…… and just get familiar with the playbook and life in the NFL.
or….
it could mean he will kept on the roster and will get some reps in practice… but the plan is to have him sit for the year regardless of whether Goff misses time.
yeah… true… but I guess my point is if he is on the 53-man… I don’t think any outside QB is signed… unless Goff is hurt and lands on IR for a period of time.
They’ve seen Sudfeld for a season… so I don’t think they would have re-signed him with any guaranteed money unless they planned to keep him.
I took it as DC wants to shut down any talk of HH over Goff for 2023. This effectively kills it.
But, if after the next 6 months Hooker shows no ill-effects and is grasping the offense and making the most of his plays running the scout team, then they could take that red-shirt off at any time.
DC is definitely focused on the storylines around the lions. His interview on GMFB was super interesting in how he communicated the KC opening game. He was talking about how if the lions win, they are going to be expected to win out. If they lose, they aren’t ready. Having the right mindset going into that game is very important to him as it sets the tone.
Distractions around Hooker taking over do not help the team. End that talk by “red shirting” him.
HH is a 3rd round pick fighting for a roster spot. He will start the season as the #3 or on a reserve list. Once he’s 100% physically AND learns the playbook AND shows he can run the full offense in practice…THEN he will be moved up to #2. That may or may not happen in 2023.
It’s not like Sudfield is loafing around doing nothing. He’s a pro fighting for his job. He’ll know the playbook inside and out and has run all the offense in practice.
