Ex-NFL VP of officiating says NFL refs have been approached about manipulating games

And in other news.

No doubt. And one has to think there’s been times when they’ve been on the take and never gotten caught.

The league’s embracing of gambling has probably made the amount of those encounters exponentially higher.

In today’s world these problems are fixable. With technology we could have more precise ball spots for example. What disturbs me is the leagues refusal to fix the officiating. Or even attempt. The product is suffering because of it.

Not being able to review penalties is an issue. Yes, they could call holding on almost every down but a single review for each team, I think it’s worth a try like during preseason. Allow a single review for both teams, in close games it’s everything, those late no calls for PI come to mind.

Because they want any chance they have to tilt the scales in favor of certain teams.

100% - what they are doing, they are doing on purpose
…& that is why no attempt to fix…they’ll always prefer to fix games over fix officiating.

In other news water is wet and the sky is blue.

Legalize gambling. Run 25 commercials for gambling during every game…who could have possibly seen issues arising from that. :joy::joy:

Um, I hate to break it to you. The reason is because the league DOES fix the officiating. Just not in the way you are thinking.

You say the product is suffering? How so? We’ve got a ton of teams at 7-6 to 6-7. We are in mid December and only 2 teams are officially eliminated. The league is getting the exact result they want.

Want an example? Look at how many players are complaining about holding never being called on the offense. Look at how many plays it’s shown where the offensive line does not have to line up properly. Lining up is as basic as it gets, you are either lined up or you are not. Look at how many offensive tackles get away with blatant false starts. Do you want to know WHY that never gets called? The league is trying everything they can to protect QB’s. They are blatantly allowing offensive cheating, because in their eyes the product with cheating is better than a product without.

You really did answer your own question, it’s just not the answer you want. In your eyes, a fair product is a good product. In the NFL’s eyes, a fixed product is a better product. They want certain teams to win, and be in the playoffs. They want to control outcomes of games. They want to be selective about who gets these protections. Clear example, look at how Mahomes went apeshit because the refs DARED to throw a flag for a player blatantly lined up offsides. That’s as clear of a rule as it gets being broken, and Mahomes lost his shit that they made that call. Why?? Because Mahomes isn’t used to the rules being called AGAINST him. He is used to the rules being called FOR him.

Think of how many drives get extended because of how many rules have “automatic first down” added to them. Think of how many times during the Lions Chiefs game Juwaan Taylor lined up off the line, and false started. It wasn’t until the announcers kept calling it out, and even the director of officiating stated “Yeah, this is cheating” that ALL OF A SUDDEN, it gets called at the end of the game. It’s weird! It’s ALMOST like someone spoke into a headset and said “Uh guys, too many people are saying this is obvious, go ahead and call it.” Then after the game, the NFL makes an annoucement that they are working on it. Funny how that worked. Also, teams are STILL blatantly doing it, because the refs stopped calling it!

For anyone who thinks this is all conspiracy theory stuff, go ahead and read the NFL rulebook. How many rules are slanted to help the offense and hurt the defense. That’s deliberately fixing the game. You are making it unfair to play defense. NFL wants college type games, because they THINK that’s what sponsers want. More scoring = more commerical breaks. They sell it as people want offense, but all offensive games are equally boring as all defensive games. If all offense sold, Arena League football, or NBA, would be the most popular leagues ever. If you don’t believe the NFL would deliberately fix games, then ask yourself “Why is the NFL the ONLY professional sports league, without professionally paid officials?” It’s almost, like they want to keep things exactly how they are…

All of that is fine and dandy as long as the calls are being made against BOTH teams for infractions. When one team is amassing 100+ yards in penalties and the opposition 10 yards, something smells.

Not to mention the rules that are left ambiguous so officials can subjectively make the call. It’s egregious.

This relates a little.
As a fan of the game
History of the game
I hated seeing this play wiped out in a technical penalty that a warning could’ve been given since it’s not exactly consequential to the play

… and refs can do stuff like that so often as a judgement to decide when it matters

“Toney claimed that it’s the referee’s job to tell a player if he is lined up illegally. That’s not a requirement of the officials’ job, although officials do sometimes give warnings to players and coaches.”

My understanding is that if you ask, they will tell you but they don;t volunteer the info. It was up to Toney to ask.

@Mr.Peabody has also pointed out that the refs will call a lopsided game that helps tilt the game… and then once the game outcome is no longer in doubt… will call multiple penalties on the team winning to even the penalty count out.

In other words… Packers may be rarely flagged thru 3 quarters…
while Lions get flagged for mysterious hands to the face flags that are only 5 yards… but carry that important automatic first down.
Defensive holding… only 5 yards… auto first down.

Then Packers have a 14 point lead in 4th quarter…
and flag city happens on Packers offense.
All of the sudden… Packers get hit with 10 and 15 yard penalties while milking the clock under 4 minutes to go….

Final penalties end up almost even in yardage….
though the impact on the game outcome was lopsided.

Thank you!! During my soapbox speech, I had another example I forgot. Remember the Lions-Ravens game, when Lamar ran a play a full 2 seconds after the play clock expired?? Remember the NFL’s explanation on why a flag wasn’t thrown? “The play clock is subjective.” That’s why it’s a physical device, that has rules built around it, so the ref can subjectively decide whether or not to use it.

If you still don’t believe the NFL is fixed after hear that, you need to stop holding out and share whatever you are on with the rest of us.

Some people need to wrap their brains around this fact. There is nothing to “fix” for the league. They are getting what they want. What the fans want is not what the league wants.

A few years ago the league gave “New York” the ability to talk to in game refs about obvious mistakes they see on the monitor, and fix on the fly. They have generally only used this option to benefit teams like the Packers. For most other teams they say “that play is not subject to review. Oh well.”

Sure but in the spirit of the game

And the play we lost

We’d have never known it was illegal since we see others have gotten away with it

Just a shame for fans as a Kelce signature play on steller career
