Falcons reportedly sign CB A.J. Terrell to 4-year, $81M extension

A couple of things to unpack here as it relates to the Lions.

  1. It’s a good thing the Lions were able to acquire both Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw at rookie contract prices for the next 4-5 years.

  2. Such contracts may make Carlton Davis, if he plays well as expected, a one-year proposition. He may literally be too expensive for the Lions to re-sign.

  3. If the Lions cannot fit Davis into the budget and he signs a big contract elsewhere, that should translate into a 3rd to 4th Rd compensatory pick if the Lions don’t sign more qualifying FAs than they lose.

At 25+, it’s definitely a 3rd.

I’d be surprised if Davis got that high of a contract. He’ll be 28 next offseason and his last season with TB was worse than any season Terrell’s ever had. Davis is more scheme-specific. He’ll undoubtedly rehab his stock with us, but I’d be surprised if they were to those levels. Terrell is a stud.

CD3 is getting 14 mil this year

He would need 13mil approx to get a 4th comp pick for us

He will be 28

Fuller was 29 and signed with Dolphins for 7.5 million per year this offseason

I would consider it best case scenario for us to have CD3 ball out for us, win a superbowl then go sign somewhere else

And we end up with a 4th round comp pick bean.

Davis also has a long injury history. Missed 16 games the past 3 seasons. That will likely impact future contracts.
