Favorite Lions 2020 Draft Pick?

In the past I look back over and find my favorite pick. This normally means a player I loved combined with where we drafted him. For example, way back in 2013 (Ziggy and Slay) I LOVE the 3rd rd. pick of OG Warford. That value was incredible. That also was Mayhew’s second best draft.

With Quinn drafting for Patricia in 2018 I loved the 4th rd. picl of DT Da’Shawn Hand.
In 2019 I LOVED CB Amani Oruwariye. Incredible value in the 5th rd.
In 2017 (Bob’s worst draft) there was a LOT to like about Kenny Golladay late rd. 3. Many here HATED that pick. Whoops. But that size, production and position? VERY good value.
In 2016…I have to admit to LOVING Graham Glasgow late 3rd. I felt like we got a day one starter at that point and we did.

Who is YOUR guy in 2020? For me …I like (drum roll please!):
OLBer Julian Okwara.

I LOVE the defensive fit. In mocks I was thinking edge guy as I was afraid the value was gone in rd. 3. I was looking RB in 3 and edge in 2 but that ended up flipping.

Okwara adds a edge speed and power element lacking in our defense right now. We also know his family through Romeo (who is a very solid depth piece). I think Okwara, Flowers, Hand and then a rotation with Austin Bryant and ROMEO Okwara is solid. Could be better but could be very effective too.

I LOVE Okudah and Swift…but in terms of value Okudah doesn’t represent value. Swift does and I am really happy with that pick. But dang, Okwara has the potential to be a double digit sack guy here and that is necessary and amazing in rd. 3. Okwara can start as a pas rush specialist letting Ragland, Jarrad Davis, Tavai and Jamie Collins set the tone on early downs.

There is a lot ot like with this draft and I think Okwara represents my favorite pick and value. Thoughts?

Swift…without a doubt!

Also, intrigued with Huntley as a return man.

I like the Cephus pick. I think he’s gonna be surprisingly good. Maybe not a huge roll this year but he’ll work his way in. Big target in the red zone. Stafford will love hitting him on a slant or a drag across the middle.

I’ve got Swift, by a mile. Dude stays healthy, he has a great chance to be the 2nd most impactful guy on the team. Swift will be dumping pimp juice all over the division to the tune of 20+ yard chunks. Golliday and the boys are going to have a field day out there with defenses having to key on the run.

Yo…rest of division…Pick your poison. Ya’ll are about to get embarrassed by this offense.

Also can’t wait to see Huntly try his hand at PR/KR!

Derrick Brown.Nope.
Isaiah Simmons. Nope.
Andrew Thomas. Nope.
Jerry Jeudy. Nope.
I got nothing.

For me it’s Swift as well. It looks to be even better with the gaurds they picked up in Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg.

Swift and Stenberg for me.

Okudah for me.
But I’ll also say the string of picks from round 2 to round 4 have given me pause in my criticism of Quinn.

It is easy to love the Swift pick. Could be a HUGE part of getting this damn running game going. Finally.

After we picked Kerryon I was also excited. That was 2018. Best and LeShoure forced me to take a “I’ll believe it when I see it” approach to Johnson. And when Johnson played these past two seasons he was good. Swift and Johnson have a shot to to be special. And I thought Swift was the best back in the draft. I am excited to see these running backs push each other and hopefully lead to a successful REAL football backfield that confounds fantasy players. While winning games.

I love me some Okudah too. A real scheme fit from a college program that is very hard on players. Players there understand coches ride them to make them better players and better people. Yes, this is a shot at Slay and Diggs.

I am back to Okwara as I think he has a shot at being a special edge rusher with a solid bullrush, some nice bend and solid closing speed. In watching this highlight link Okwara does a great job of staying in his lane and I think that matters for Patricia:

I like this scheme fit as much as I like Okudah and this was a third rd. pick. Very nice.

Favorite pick? Swift. The home run hitter the Lions have needed at RB, but haven’t had since Barry Sanders.

Hmm…Debating between Swift and Jackson. I wanted Jackson in the 3rd and they did land him, but they needed to trade up to get him. I think I’ll say Swift.

My pre-draft “wish” board is below. Pretty happy with rounds 2 and 3 for sure. Too bad I didn’t use this and take Okudah with my 1st in the Den mock. I would have nailed 1, 2, and the 2nd 3rd round pick. Came close on Okwara as well.

Same for me, Swift and the guards. Let’s get this damn ground game going in 2020!

I have this dream where Jonah plays right guard until the fourth quarter and then Logan comes in, lines up beside Big V and they proceed to shove the ball right down the defense’s neck.
Platoon at RG, No hiding it.
LOL I can dream, it’s koolaid season.

Big Bo coming in to be the hammer for a series in the 4th, running to the right side…

I think Okwara is the best value as we look back from 2023. His injury put him under the radar combined with not testing at the Combine or Pro Day. Our gain. He has such a stellar bull rush and NFL ready strength at 252lbs that 2 first round tackles over 350lbs were pushed back into pressures. His own coach says he only going to get bigger, stronger, faster in the NFL.

I liked most of the picks overall. I am a fan of doubling up when there is a strong position group. I thought that group was the WR’s, but will wait to see if the RB can add some juice as the position needed more than one addition. Doubling up at OG was good as well. What the draft lacked was help on the DL as Okwara was not impressive from what I saw, but admittedly that was not a lot. I saw Madubuike sitting there and thought we would add some talent. I also wanted WR Edwards in the 3rd, but OG was a more urgent need.

Favorite pick - Swift - a RB can improve a team the quickest. When Billy and Barry came along the team was instantly must watch. This kid is not likely on that level, but he does show some elusiveness.

Least Favorite pick - Okwara - I haven’t seen a developed array of moves that will work at the NFL level and I didn’t like his balance. He also doesn’t have the strong hands that usually makes these types of players special.

I find it funny u think Johnson is special. His 3.6 yrds a carry is just so special but his really special trat is his ability to rush 113 times and have his longest run only be 20 yrds and only once, or maybe it’s him having 7 of his 10 games with his longest run less then 10 yrds , one thing about that 3.6 yrds per carry he earned it. Or maybe it’s that he can only play 8 to 10 games a season before he goes on IR. He is almost as special as Zach Follett was.

If KJ plays a major roll we will have a bad run game again. The guy can’t out run a lber, he has no burst. Bo should be the # 2 RB and was much more productive then Johnson and at 235 he can still out run a lber.

My favorite pic will be Swift he he can keep Johnson from playing much.
